Good news for a change

We sucessfully moved my mom from a nursing home to an assisted living facility yesterday.

She seems to actually like the place. She also showed some independence when she walked herself to the bathroom for the first time in 6 months- she should have called for an aide for help, but she wanted to try it. If she can build her confidence in her ability to walk, she will overcome some of the physical ailments that have hampered her since her fall, and start to enjoy herself again.

Very good news, nitrah! I hope she makes many friends there, that'll motivate her to get out and about.

That's great news....I hope she continues to like the place. That's important.

My parents just moved my uncle into a nursing home. He hates it. Hates the food, the people, everything. I don't blame him. There are two nursing homes in their area, and frankly they both stink. (Literally stink. When I used to work EMS there, I'd hold my breath every time I had to go in either of them.)

My honey's grandmother in Norway goes to an assisted living place intermittently. She's 93 and still lives alone quite happily, but every 6 weeks she goes to this assisted living place for 3 weeks. It's very nice and very clean, and there are no restrictions that prohibit her daily glass or two of wine. She has the same room every time. It breaks up her time and I think the changes keep her stimulated - although she will tell you that the only time she's ever bored is when she's with other people. When it's time for her to go to the home, she never wants to go. But by the second day, she's happy to be there - and is always surprised that it's already time to leave when her 3 weeks are up. Nice setup, really, and it gives his family a bit of a break to know that she's well cared for when she's there.

Good news. Assisted living is a HUGE improvement over nursing home. Nursing homes are so friggin' depressing. ALF's are much homier and more cheerful. No contest.
