I think this new consolidation covers everything...

Game #162: Songwich

Identify the 100 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make several excursions elsewhere, including a few notable album cuts.) Then, match them into 45 foursomes according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself.

51 songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity. 13 songs will be used three times, each time in a different capacity. One song will be used four times, each time in a different capacity. Yes, there are four ways a song can be used, though two of them are variations of the same usage. You’ll see, I hope.

At least two of the songs in every foursome are used more than once in the game. In twelve of the foursomes, all four songs are used more than once in the game.

A song cannot be used twice in the same foursome.

Where a song title is relevant, words in parentheses should be treated as part of the title.

Where an artist is relevant, I am usually looking for the original artist. There are a few exceptions where someone else arguably had the definitive and/or most successful version of a song.

I hope this proves an easier nut to crack than the last game. And I do hope those pesky alternate solutions don’t screw things up. Play on!

These are the two matches I did not intend:

14. YOU... + BELONG (29. R.E.M.) + 9. ...TO ME = YOU BELONG TO ME (41. Carly Simon)
[There's more than one title that begins with YOU, so I avoided songs that began with that word, plus I didn't realize R.E.M. has a song called 'Belong.' R.E.M. is the filler for a different songwich, and Carly Simon is a songwich but with different components.]

80. HOW DO... + YOU (20. Gilbert O’Sullivan) + 45. ...DO IT = HOW DO YOU DO IT (17. Gerry and the Pacemakers)
[This one is my fault. I didn't realize O'Sullivan had a song called 'You;' it certainly didn't chart. I intended HOW DO YOU DO IT, but with the DO distributed differently.]

Turns out the Gilbert O'Sullivan song is REALLY titled You Are You. So, not your fault.

It was one of my favorites - I thought it was a moderate US hit -- you are the only apartment that I care to rent.

The correct Carly Simon match is one of my favorite Oscar-winning songs (and one I should have gotten MUCH earlier because of the filling)

91. LET... + 7. THE RIVER (Springsteen) + 61. RUN = LET THE RIVER RUN (41. Carly Simon)

I heard this song at the casino last night, and realized it had to be the filler to one of these songwiches...

60. NO + SUGAR (18. Maroon 5) + 75. TONIGHT = NO SUGAR TONIGHT (35. The Guess Who)

I think this has to be a songwich song... the only question is whether this is where The Beatles come in or not (The song did not chart and I have no idea how well known it is among their deeper cuts)...

25. WHAT A + GIRL (1. The Beatles) + 37. WANTS = WHAT A GIRL WANTS (67. Christina Aguilera)

I consider any Beatles song fair game. In short ... yes.

Let's try this, then:

80. HOW... + DO YOU (32. Ne-Yo) + 45. ...DO IT = HOW DO YOU DO IT (17. Gerry and the Pacemakers)

As for R.E.M. fillers, the first song that popped into my head was "Stand". I can make a songwich with that one:

77. GET UP... + STAND (29. R.E.M.) + 100. ...UP = GET UP, STAND UP (60. Bob Marley)
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

Oh, here's another one that I should have gotten a long time ago, but I didn't have the "Never" until Melly looked it up:

96. NEVER... + SAY (52. John Mayer) + 1. ...GOODBYE = NEVER SAY GOODBYE (26. Bon Jovi)

That's now four uses of Bon Jovi.
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

One of my favorite R&B songs of 1990 is the filling for one of Jacko's many #1 hits:

25. WHAT A + GIRL (1. The Beatles) + 37. WANTS = WHAT A GIRL WANTS (67. Christina Aguilera)
I consider any Beatles song fair game. In short ... yes.
Again, another favorite of mine makes the game!!

I was struggling to come up with a "Stay" that wasn't done by Maurice Williams, Jackson Browne, Jodeci, Shakespeare's Sister, or Lisa Loeb. I had to dig deep into the Billboard archives to find one:

98. LET'S... + STAY (46. Rihanna) + 62. ...TOGETHER = LET'S STAY TOGETHER (19. Al Green)

It should be noted that the Four Seasons also did a song called "Stay", but Frank explicitly stated that a song could not be used twice in the same quartet. This quartet is probably why.

Since the Four Seasons' "Stay" is a cover of the Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs song, would using it have violated the "original artist" concept -- or was that only for the songs in the list themselves?

Some likely "fillings:"

Nas did "I Can."

Green Day did "She."

Heart did "Alone" and "Never."

Frankie Avalon did "Why."

Spice Girls did "Stop" and "Goodbye."

Justin Timberlake did "Mirrors" and "My Love."

Even though "Wheelhouse" started yesterday, I haven't forgotten about this game. Here are five songs that utilize a song/artist that hasn't been used yet:

13. WHEN I... + THINK (44. Aretha Franklin) + 32. ...OF YOU = WHEN I THINK OF YOU (59. Janet Jackson)

37. IF... + I CAN (58. Nas) + 73. ...DREAM = IF I CAN DREAM (100. Elvis Presley)

59. DOESN'T... + SOMEBODY (30. Bryan Adams) + 12. ...WANT TO BE WANTED = DOESN'T SOMEBODY WANT TO BE WANTED (88. the Partridge Family)

68. I'LL... + NEVER (83. Heart) + 36. ...FALL IN LOVE AGAIN = I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN (2. Dionne Warwick)

69. NOT A... + BAD (3. Michael Jackson) + 39. ...THING = NOT A BAD THING (99. Justin Timberlake)

Also, I totally forgot that one of Elvis's #1 hits was called simply "Don't". That could be a filler word for just about anything, including this song:

30. PLEASE... + DON'T (100. Elvis Presley) + 51. ...GO = PLEASE DON'T GO (75. KC & the Sunshine Band)

That gives us a total of 40 quartets now. There are five remaining.

The last unused song/artist on the board is #50. We've already established that the Spice Girls have to be here as a "filling", but we don't yet know which song will be a "filling" in this game. It could be "Goodbye", "Stop", or "Too Much".

Only one entry in this game is used four times. We already know that's Bon Jovi.

Thirteen entries will be used three times. Only six entries have been used three times so far, and they will not be used again.

Since 51 entries will be used twice, that means that 35 entries will be used only once. We'll have to focus on those entries will two or fewer asterisks in order to find the final five quartets.

Yup. All these additions are correct. (In general, there were far fewer legitimate alternative answers than I had originally feared.)

Oho... this is a sneaky one, Frank! Thought you could put some proper names past me, huh?

94. JUST LIKE... + JESSE (41. Carly Simon) + 22. ...JAMES = JUST LIKE JESSE JAMES (57. Cher)

Not only that, but you found a way to reunite James Taylor and Carly Simon. :P

This is now three uses of Bob Dylan. He's done.
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)

And this one is even sneakier. One of those "same word repeated three times" song titles.

85. STOP... + STOP (50. the Spice Girls) + 38. ...STOP = STOP STOP STOP (24. the Hollies)

That's it for Fleetwood Mac now.

I think this one is legit, although the "filling" song is quite obscure.

19. TIRED OF... + WAITING (12. Green Day) + 68. ...FOR YOU = TIRED OF WAITING FOR YOU (92. the Kinks)

Two matches left. That means eight songs will be used again--five of them need to be used a third time.

Most Green Day songs are obscure for me but I think this is too good not to be right.

This is the one I had the most qualms about using, but the match was irresistible. And it did make it onto the Modern Rock charts.
