The Boney 500: Album #109

99. PLASTIC ONO BAND-JOHN LENNON/PLASTIC ONO BAND (1970)

This was a hard one to rank. It is not an easy album to listen to, as it is so
intensely personal you feel like you're intruding on John's privacy. He had been
undergoing a brief period of primal scream therapy, dealing with childhood traumas,
public scrutiny/ridicule over his relationship with Yoko, the Beatles' breakup, and
so on, and boy, does he lay bare and raw his emotions on this album. This is powerful
stuff, made even more intimate by the sparse instrumentation. Songs like "Mother" and
"God"..well, it's a far cry from "I Want To Hold Your Hand", that's for sure. Yet
among these incendiary tracks are a couple of quiet, gentle, love songs. "Love", for
instance, is simple yet profound in its beauty. One of the albums I admire most,
even though I really have to be in the mood to listen to it. When I do, it's a rewarding
experience. This album post has bonus tracks at the end. "My Mummy's Dead" is the
last cut on the album proper.
