The Boney 500: Songs 266-264

#1 Post by T_Bone0806 » Thu Jul 07, 2016 12:24 pm

Here are today's songs...

266. HAVE YOU EVER LOVED A WOMAN-DEREK AND THE DOMINOES (1970)
ALBUM: Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs

The guitar work on this is astounding...and Clapton's vocal is drenched in the blues...the
lyrics, like those in the title track, expressing the agony of being in love with his
buddy George Harrison's wife.

265. SHANGRI-LA-ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (1976)
ALBUM: A New World Record

Jeff Lynne wears his Beatles influences proudly, even to the point of name-checking them in
the process ("My Shangri-La has gone away, faded like the Beatles on 'Hey Jude'"..a pretty
clever line I think). It's a lovely song.

264. AGAINST THE WIND-BOB SEGER AND THE SILVER BULLET BAND (1980)
ALBUM: Against The Wind

The late Glenn Frey of The Eagles contributes background vocals here, and the harmonies are
beautiful. It has a sad tone to it, yet it also seems to convey a cautious optimism, or at
least a vow to persevere no matter what. Couldn't hunt down a Youtube video for the song by itself,
so had to go with an album. Skip ahead to 9:39 for this song.

Maybe he was feeling that, but he didn't write the song. It was written several years earlier by Billy Myles and first recorded by Freddie King in 1960.

I figured that's the reason he recorded it, the lyrics hitting so close to home...
