Re: RIP Scotty Moore
Fresh Air (NPR) replayed a very nice 20+ year old interview with him today.
He's asked several times at the end if he'd been in touch with Elvis toward the end of Elvis's life & he diplomatically said "it was a lot easier for Elvis to get in touch with me than me with him, & he didn't (get in touch with Moore)".
He also said he & the other guys in the original band didn't think Elvis was going to age gracefully; "what's he gonna do if he starts losing his hair?". He couldn't understand how a person as vain about his appearance as the Elvis he knew had let himself get so bloated at the end.
I hate to highlight appearance stuff in an interview that was primarily about music, but one other appearance thing stands out; Moore emphasized that Elvis's penchant for dressing up in "pink pants, or maybe pink shirt, but pants anyway with a white stripe down the side" & what Moore calls "a New York ducktail haircut in Mississippi!" was all Elvis's own (& made him hard to market even to people who had already heard the records & wanted to hear his sound in person). Moore said the national appearances with Tommy Dorsey & one other band popular at the time (way before the Ed Sullivan show appearance) is what broke Elvis nation-wide.

You can go to Fresh Air's web site & listen to it. What used to be just an archive is now called a podcast. Don't know how that changes it.
Important thing is that this interview from 20+ years ago, as it was initially archived on good ole analog media (tape) wouldn't have been available on that site, but they've recently started transcribing all the analog interviews to digital storage, & it looks like at least the excerpts from this one that were played this week are now available.
