The Boney 500: Songs 350-348

#1 Post by T_Bone0806 » Mon May 30, 2016 9:43 am

Here are the first 3 songs, counting down to my favorite song of all time:

350. LOVELY TO SEE YOU-MOODY BLUES (1969)
ALBUM: On The Threshhold Of A Dream

The Moodys' signature sound is in full force here on this Justin
Hayward-led track. I usually find Hayward's compositions and voice to
be the most accessible.

349. (I Don't Want To Love You But) YOU GOT ME ANYWAY-SUTHERLAND
BROTHERS AND QUIVER (1973)
ALBUM: Lifeboat(US Version only)

One of those "how in the world was this not a hit?" records. It got a
good amount of airplay on my local stations, but nationally it never
made the Top 40, peaking at #48. Back then most programmers made their
own decisions,. These days, a handful of corporations own the lion's share
of radio stations, so what gets played in El Paso is the same exact thing
that gets played in Portland Maine and everywhere else...and it's all taken
from a heavily researched lowest common denominator VERY restrictive playlist.
Had that been the case in 1973, I probably would never have been permitted to
hear this gem of an early power popper. The brothers were a Scottish duo who hooked
up for a few albums with the band Quiver. One of the members of that band was
Bruce Thomas, who went on to become one of Elvis Costello's Attractions.

348. DON'T GIVE UP-PETER GABRIEL WITH KATE BUSH (1986)
ALBUM: So

This elegant heart-tugger is a testament to the strength one can find in
the support of a soulmate. The video for this is one of my all-time
favorites as well, and yet is one of the most simple. It just shows Gabriel and
Bush holding on to each other while the camera moves slowly, and perfectly timed,
around them. Extremely moving and powerful.

This is also one of my all-time favorite videos, despite its simplicity. The camera doesn't move around them, though, as the sun is fixed behind them. The sun also plays a part, as it goes into eclipse while PG sings the downer part, only to reappear as KB sings the uplifting part. Having them sing on some kind of turntable also allows the directors (Godley & Crème from 10cc, by the way) to rotate the hugging couple such that whoever is singing faces the camera.

Great choice!

PS. Just adding the youtube tags around the Youtube URLs (as you have them) will embed the video into your post. I think some people will click on embedded videos, but not links.

Looking forward to your lists, as always!

Thanks Esto. My bad. I stayed long enough to make sure I got the actual video I wanted, then moved on to the next one. I did a bunch of these at one sitting, as I wanted to try to avoid getting behind on them. I relied on my increasingly faulty memory and it bit me.

Wonderful choices. "Lovely to see you" is immediately accessible, mostly because of, as you note, the airplay.

With these at 348-350, I wonder what can be good enough to be at #1. Looking forward to it.

Several years ago we saw the Moody Blues in concert, and they opened with Lovely To See You.

My wife and I were both 47 then, and we were practically the youngest people there.

These are the songs that always interest me... the local/regional hits that would be completely swept under the rug today. I agree with you that this would've fit right in with what was popular at the time, and I hope there are more lesser known "shoulda been hits" to come!

No need to apologize. Since PG is one of my all-time favorite artists, I have watched this about a hundred times. It is etched in my brain. You nailed everything else about it:
• The slow camera movement
• Perfect timing
• Extremely moving and powerful.

Ditto!
