It's not often that I find much to praise about the current crop of Republican politicians, but our governor, Nathan Deal, has my admiration and respect. Twice, he's stood up to the yahoos that control the Georgia General Assembly and vetoed bad legislation. First, it was the "It's OK to Discriminate As Long as God Told You To" bill that, if signed, would have cost Georgia lots of money in terms of entertainment and sporting events and business relocations. Now, he's vetoed the "Campus Carry" law that would have turned college campuses into 21st century versions of the OK Corral with hundreds of intoxicated frat boys and party animals just itching to show their expertise with firearms. Last month, two UGA football players were arrested for taking target practice with a BB gun in their dorm room. Just think how much fun idiots would have had trying their luck with higher powered ammo.
Deal is term limited, so he's out of politics in all probability in 2018, no matter what he does. But he has ideas of passing comprehensive education reform next year, and this decision can't help his chances in that regard. By the way, Deal was elected to Congress in a district in the NW Georgia mountains as a Democrat in 1992 and re-elected in 1994, before switching parties the next year. He served a total of nine terms in Congress, most against token opposition, before being elected governor in 2010.

Appears he's still a Democrat and just ran as a Republican, like Trump.silverscreenselect wrote:elected to Congress in a district in the NW Georgia mountains as a Democrat in 1992 and re-elected in 1994
as opposed to your position of "you've got to behave like the government tells you to regardless of your personal moral code". We saw a lot of the in the late 1930s and early 1940s."It's OK to Discriminate As Long as God Told You To"
Texas' goes into effect in August. I'll let reality be the judge, but I don't expect any increase in violence, and perhaps a decrease."Campus Carry" law that would have turned college campuses into 21st century versions of the OK Corral with hundreds of intoxicated frat boys and party animals just itching to show their expertise with firearms.
..what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms.

Tennessee just passed a campus carry bill too - Although IIRC it's limited to faculty and staff who have carry permits, not students. It also leaves it up to each institution as to if they want to make it their policy. It passes without Gov. Bill Haslam's support or signature.

And, as usual, you'd be wrong. While in the House, Deal regularly had high ratings from conservative groups. When he ran for governor in 2010, there were four major Republican candidates. Deal finished second to Secretary of State Karen Handel, who was considered a moderate, but ahead of the other two convservatives in the race. He barely beat Handel in a runoff and then won the general election fairly easily.BackInTex wrote:Appears he's still a Democrat and just ran as a Republican, like Trump.silverscreenselect wrote:elected to Congress in a district in the NW Georgia mountains as a Democrat in 1992 and re-elected in 1994
Here's his ratings up until the 2014 election when he won his second term. They were consistently very high from conservative groups and very low from liberal groups. However, apparently, he's one of those rare Republicans whose brain hasn't completely atrophied from drinking too much tea and listening to too much Limbaugh.
