Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

It's safe to say that Tubman, like Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, would not find themselves at home in the Republican party of today.

Safe? Maybe. Correct? No.

A gun toting black woman who abetted a known terrorist (John Brown) who led an armed attack on a federal facility. Sure.

Of course, in her later years, Harriet got to know Republican fair treatment up close and personal as her requests for a pension based on her war service got held up for over three decades.

I do not feel at home in the Republican party of today. But you have no basis to make that determination. But I would, through my own predjudices, venture to guess they would all disdain the current Democrat party. There you go. We are both pissing in the wind.

They're replacing a slave owner with an Underground Railroad conductor.

I keep meaning to do a special edition when I have nothing else to do. One of these times, that'll happen...

One of my Democratic friends insists that T. Roosevelt did not find himself particularly at home in the Republican Party that made him President. I started to read the book upon which he bases this assertion, but it was even longer than Deathly Hallows so gave it up.

Your friend is correct, and so the Democrats won 1912 with the segregationist Woodrow Wilson

He was more than a segregationist, he wanted to ship them all back to Africa.

His wife, Edith Bolling, was my 6th cousin 3x removed. :P
