Geography 101 -- Hockey Style

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Thu Apr 07, 2016 9:43 pm

The Frozen Four, the college hockey equivalent of the Final Four, is taking place this week. Like the Final Four, it's held at prearranged sites and usually not the home arena of one of the paricipants (who this year were Boston College, Quinnipiac, Denver, and North Dakota). This year, the University of Wisconsin, which has six national championships, but a losing record this season, is the host team, and the event is being played right around the corner from their campus....

Actually, it's around a whole lot of corners, all the way down in Tampa, FL. Not surprisingly, the state of Florida does not have a single university that plays NCAA level hockey (they have a number of schools that have hockey clubs).

Semifinals are today. The championship will be Saturday night.

IIRC correctly, there's only one NCAA D-I hockey-playing school south of the Mason-Dixon line (or thereabouts), and that's Alabama-Huntsville.

Last time they played in Tampa, UAH was the host of record. I'm not sure what's involved with that other than the name somewhere on the boards or on the ice.
