Lyrically Speaking - 4/1/16

#1 Post by elwoodblues » Thu Mar 31, 2016 8:04 pm

In January we lost two of the people who helped to create what was for many of us the soundtrack of our youth. Today there are 12 songs: six by David Bowie, three by Glenn Frey solo and three Eagles songs which Frey co-wrote. One point for the title, one point for the artist and there are two bonus questions. You may use B for Bowie, F for Frey and E for Eagles. This game will be open until Sunday night.

1. And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

2. You've got to carry weapons
'Cause you always carry cash
There's lots of shady characters
Lots of dirty deals

3. Well, I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
Such a fine sight to see
It's a girl my Lord in a flat-bed Ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me

4. Hey man, my schooldays insane
Hey man, my work's down the drain
Hey man, well she's a total blam-blam

5. "Nein! It's mine!" is just his line
To bind your time, it drives you to, crime

6. You can spend all your time making money
You can spend all your love making time
If it all fell to pieces tomorrow
Would you still be mine?

7. Some of these days, and it won't be long
Gonna drive back down where you once belonged
In the back of a dream car twenty foot long
Don't cry my sweet, don't break my heart

8. The shadows high on the darker side
Behind the doors, it's a wilder ride
You can make a break, you can win or lose
That's a chance you take…

9. But the freak, and his type, all for nothing
Misses a step and cuts his hand, but
Showing nothing, he swoops like a song
She cries "Where have all Papa's heroes gone?"

10. Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows;
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

11. The moon comes up and the music calls
You're gettin' tired of starin' at the same four walls
You're out of your room and down on the street
Movin' through the crowd and the midnight heat
The traffic crawls, the sirens scream
You look at the faces, it's just like a dream

12. Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much she knows
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?

Bonus: For three points, what is the name of the 1976 movie in which David Bowie played a space alien who came to this planet?

Bonus 2: For one point each, in #3 what was the total number of women on the singer's mind (not counting the girl, my Lord, in the flatbed Ford) and of that total how many wanted to own him, how many wanted to stone him, and how many said they were a friend of his?

Bowie

8. The shadows high on the darker side
Behind the doors, it's a wilder ride
You can make a break, you can win or lose
That's a chance you take…

The heat is on, Frey

9. But the freak, and his type, all for nothing
Misses a step and cuts his hand, but
Showing nothing, he swoops like a song
She cries "Where have all Papa's heroes gone?"

Bowie

10. Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows;
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, Eagles

11. The moon comes up and the music calls
You're gettin' tired of starin' at the same four walls
You're out of your room and down on the street
Movin' through the crowd and the midnight heat
The traffic crawls, the sirens scream
You look at the faces, it's just like a dream

Frey

12. Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much she knows
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?

Bowie

Bonus: For three points, what is the name of the 1976 movie in which David Bowie played a space alien who came to this planet?

Bonus 2: For one point each, in #3 what was the total number of women on the singer's mind (not counting the girl, my Lord, in the flatbed Ford) and of that total how many wanted to own him, how many wanted to stone him, and how many said they were a friend of his?

I've got seven women on my mind --
Four that want to own me
Two that want to stone me
One says she's a friend of mine.

Seven.

I had never heard of any of these people until earlier this year when Mr. David Bowie went over the Rainbow Bridge. I read a little bit about him then and more and more since. After seeing a lot of things he'd said and done, I was surprised to realize that Mr. David seemed to have the soul of a ninja. (Do two-footers have souls like dogs do? I think so, and I hope so.) Then I was even more surprised to find out that I was not the first to believe he had an inner ninja. For the purposes of this game, I'm going through all the lyrics bits to try to find the six that seem to have the most ninja-like words and call those for Mr. David. Then, because I still don't know anything about Mr. Glen Frey or Mr. Eagles, I'll just guess on the rest. Maybe I'll get a little bit lucky.
1. And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through
Mr. David
2. You've got to carry weapons
'Cause you always carry cash
There's lots of shady characters
Lots of dirty deals
Mr. Glen
3. Well, I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
Such a fine sight to see
It's a girl my Lord in a flat-bed Ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me
Mr. Eagles
4. Hey man, my schooldays insane
Hey man, my work's down the drain
Hey man, well she's a total blam-blam
Mr. David
5. "Nein! It's mine!" is just his line
To bind your time, it drives you to, crime
Mr. David
6. You can spend all your time making money
You can spend all your love making time
If it all fell to pieces tomorrow
Would you still be mine?
Mr. Glen
7. Some of these days, and it won't be long
Gonna drive back down where you once belonged
In the back of a dream car twenty foot long
Don't cry my sweet, don't break my heart
Mr. Glen
8. The shadows high on the darker side

You can make a break, you can win or lose
That's a chance you take…
Mr. David

Mr. David -- I thought the title of this was Ground Control to Major Tom, but that's probably too easy to be true.
Bonus: For three points, what is the name of the 1976 movie in which David Bowie played a space alien who came to this planet?
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Bonus 2: For one point each, in #3 what was the total number of women on the singer's mind (not counting the girl, my Lord, in the flatbed Ford) and of that total how many wanted to own him, how many wanted to stone him, and how many said they were a friend of his?
I do not know. Jett, the dog next door, says anybody who has more than three girlfriens is just being greedy. I will guess four, divided up as 1 owner, 1 stoner, and 2 girlfriens, because a song about a greedy two-footer might be more interesting.

Now, instead of just a picture, I will provide evidence that Mr. David Bowie was (and maybe still is) a ninja. If you listen to the whole song, you will note that halfway through, the ninja sensei starts denying being Mr. David. In this case, the denial is the same as confirmation of the fact, because denying one's better-known two-footer personality is exactly what a real ninja would do!

LB got a point for his comments.

Bebe got a point for offering proof that David Bowie was a ninja and for "Mr. Eagles."
