Lyrically Speaking - 3/28/16
We will begin this fortnight of LS with some fun songs from the early years of rock and roll. The most recent of these songs is from 1964. One point for the title, one point for the artist, and there is a bonus question.
1. Don't you give me no dirty looks
Your father's hip; he knows what cooks
Just tell your hoodlum friend outside
You ain't got time to take a ride
2. Ah, she likes to travel around
She'll love you but she'll put you down
Now people let me put you wise
___ goes out with other guys
3. I was wrong-a
To-oo try
To lo-ove two
A-hoopa, a-hoopa, hoopa
4. I got a gal, named Daisy, she almost drives me crazy,
Got a gal, named Daisy, she almost drives me crazy,
She knows how to love me, yes indeed,
Boy you don't know what she's doin' to me
5. Three nights and days I sailed the sea.
I think of the girl constantly.
On the ship, I dream she there.
I smell the rose that's in her hair.
6. Now d'ja hear 'bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?
7. [Here’s one Lizbit and Bebe might like.]
Well they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie
Yeah they said you was high-classed
Well, that was just a lie
8. Ridin' along in my calaboose
Still tryin' to get her belt unloose
All the way home I held a grudge,
But the safety belt, it wouldn't budge
Bonus: For two points each, which of these songs was the earliest (there are two answers I will accept) and which was the most recent?

1. Yakkety-Yak/The Coasters
2. Runaround Sue/Dion and the Belmost
4. Tutti Frutti/Little Richard
6. Mack the Knife/Bobby Darin
7. Hound Doug/Big Mama Thornton (and also some guy named Presley)

Bonus: For two points each, which of these songs was the earliest (there are two answers I will accept) and which was the most recent?
I think Big Mama Thornton's version of Hound Dog was the earliest.
I know that none of the ones I identified was as late as 1964, so I'll guess #5 is the lastest.

I'm a happy ninja. I thought all I would do was look for a picture, but between Lizbit and me, we think we know two of them.
I didn't recognize #6, but Lizbit did. She said our big sis Annie taught it to her as a song from an opera. She said Annie liked opera. The name of the song is Mack the Knife, and the opera is The Three-Penny Opera. We don't know who sang it, but Lizbit suggested that we answer Mr. Frank Sinatra, because he sang a lot of good songs.
#7 is You Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog, by Mr. Elvis. This played on the music machine at sports school sometimes, and it made all the barn cats smile.
The opera was written in the 1920s, so #6 has to be the earliest. We will take a guess at the most recent -- #8 -- because that's how many legs my sis and I have between us.
Here are my pictures: Smiling Cat

I don't know why my second picture won't come up. Maybe it's not on the interwebs any more, but Mr. Google still has it in his collection.
Oh, well.

She knows how to love me, yes indeed,
Boy you don't know what she's doin' to me

I think of the girl constantly.
On the ship, I dream she there.
I smell the rose that's in her hair.

After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor

All the way home I held a grudge,

Bonus: For two points each, which of these songs was the earliest (there are two answers I will accept) and which was the most recent?
There were three songs I accepted for the earliest. Tutti Frutti (1955) was the earliest if you look at the best-known version of each, but Hound Dog was first released in 1953 by blues singer Big Mama Thornton. And Mack The Knife has them all beat if you go back to the Threepenny Opera.
The most recent is No Particular Place To Go (1964).
LB got a point for his answers.
Kroxquo got a point for the information about Mack The Knife.
Bebe got a point for the picture and for the logic she used to guess correctly for the most recent song.

Mr. elwood, thank you for the nice video of Mr. Frank. Don't tell her I said so, but sometimes Lizbit seems really smart.

I'm gonna say #6 for earliest since it was based on Dreigroschenoper (Threepenny Opera) by Bertolt Brecht.
As for latest . . . I'll guess that #4, Tutti Frutti, is our 1964 song.

Shoot. I got more than LB, but I don't get any credit for it.
Oh well. I won.

Don't know about Mr. Bone, but I didn't realize the Monday (3/28) game would end so early Monday evening. I'll go back and look at your rules/schedule and adjust myself. Sorry about that!elwoodblues wrote:Where were TBone and Estonut?

Sheesh! It's all in your second sentence, "The games will be posted at 9pm Central time the night before the date of the game, and the answers to the previous game will be posted right after that."Estonut wrote:Don't know about Mr. Bone, but I didn't realize the Monday (3/28) game would end so early Monday evening. Funny you should ask.........Where were TBone and Estonut?
I did a quick drive-by yesterday morning but had some other things to attend to. Figured I'd come back in a couple of hours and answer...the songs were in my wheelhouse.
Unfortunately, short term memory is NOT in my wheelhouse. I remembered I still needed to post my answers, alright...as I was drifting off to sleep last night.
Duh.
