Lyrically Speaking - 3/29/16

#1 Post by elwoodblues » Mon Mar 28, 2016 8:00 pm

These songs all have something in common in the lyrics. I don't have LB's deep bench of Merry Men to choose from to offer a hint (I have four but none of them would be any help here) but there is a clue in the quoted lyrics for one of them. One point for the title, one point for the artist, and there is a three-point bonus question.

1. Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

2. One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away
He's lookin' for that home, and I hope he finds it
But, I'd trade all of my tomorrows, for a single yesterday

3. They said stay at home boy, you gotta tend the farm
Living in the city boy, is going to break your heart
But how can you stay, when your heart says no
How can you stop when your feet say go

4. If you come down to the river
Bet you gonna find some people who live
You don't have to worry 'cause you have no money
People on the river are happy to give

5. Busted, down on Bourbon Street, set up, like a bowlin' pin.
Knocked down, it get's to wearin' thin. They just won't let you be, oh no.

6. He sat in her boudoir while she freshened up
The boy drank all her magnolia-wine
On the black satin sheets oh I swear he started to freak

7. You might not see him in person but he'll see you just the same.
You might not see him in person but he'll see you just the same.
Yeah, yeah.
You don't have to worry 'cause takin' care of business is his name.

8. Well my father was a gambler down in Georgia
But he wound up on the wrong end of a gun
And I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus
Rollin' down highway 41

Hmmm...of the ones I know, all but one of them have an elision (no final "g"). I suppose it could be "Risin' Sun", so I'll go with the theme "Songs with titles that have an elided g in them".

That's Proud Mary, by Miss Tuna Turner. My sister dances around the house to this one. She looks pretty silly, but she says it's good exercise.

We declare the theme to be Liquids-- water in the river, Bourbon, wine, gasoline in the bus, and so forth.

I'd like to see that Greyhound bus. I think a bus full of Greyhounds would be a beautiful sight!

Here's my picture to illustrate the theme:

elwoodblues wrote:These songs all have something in common in the lyrics. I don't have LB's deep bench of Merry Men to choose from to offer a hint (I have four but none of them would be any help here) but there is a clue in the quoted lyrics for one of them. One point for the title, one point for the artist, and there is a three-point bonus question.

1. Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

House of the Rising Sun - Animals

2. One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away
He's lookin' for that home, and I hope he finds it
But, I'd trade all of my tomorrows, for a single yesterday

Me And Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin

3. They said stay at home boy, you gotta tend the farm
Living in the city boy, is going to break your heart
But how can you stay, when your heart says no
How can you stop when your feet say go

Honky Cat - Elton John

4. If you come down to the river
Bet you gonna find some people who live
You don't have to worry 'cause you have no money
People on the river are happy to give

Proud Mary - CCR or Ike & Tina or sure, why not, Leonard Nimoy

5. Busted, down on Bourbon Street, set up, like a bowlin' pin.
Knocked down, it get's to wearin' thin. They just won't let you be, oh no.

Truckin' - Grateful Dead

6. He sat in her boudoir while she freshened up
The boy drank all her magnolia-wine
On the black satin sheets oh I swear he started to freak

Lady Marmalade - Labelle

7. You might not see him in person but he'll see you just the same.
You might not see him in person but he'll see you just the same.
Yeah, yeah.
You don't have to worry 'cause takin' care of business is his name.

Jesus Just Went To Chicago - ZZ Top

8. Well my father was a gambler down in Georgia
But he wound up on the wrong end of a gun
And I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus
Rollin' down highway 41

Ramblin' Man - Allman Brothers

Bonus: What is the theme?

Songs that mention New Orleans. Bourbon Street in #5 was the intended clue.
Estonut got a point for Invisible Elvis.

Bebe got a point for wanting to see the bus full of greyhounds.
