Lyrically Speaking - 2/22/16

#1 Post by Noah's Ark » Mon Feb 22, 2016 7:44 am

Land ho! I had a lot of fun floating in LB's backyard over Christmas, but now that it's dried up around here, me and this menagerie are keelhauling it outta here. But before I go, here's an LSWE game for you where all of the song titles or artists contain a word that has to do with water. I'd let you borrow my divining rod for this game, but I need to quickly find something wet to float in besides this empty ditch...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. You can run but you cannot hide;
this is widely known
And what you plan to do with your foolish pride
when you're all by yourself alone

2. Whenever he calls my name
So slow, sweet and plain
I feel, yeah, yeah, well I feel that burning flame

3. Do you remember when we met
That's the day I knew you were my pet

4. I don't know why you treat me so bad
Think of all the things we could have had
Love is an ocean that I can't forget
My sweet sixteen I would never regret

5. Doing alright
A little jiving on a Saturday night
And come what may
Gonna dance the day away

6. Come on you little fighter
No need to get uptighter
Come on you little fighter
And get back up again

7. Come on and dance guys grab a girl don't wait make the twirl
It's your world and I'm just a squirrel
Trying to get a nut to move your butt to the dance floor

8. I could tell she liked me from the way she stared (the way she stared)
And the way she said you missed a spot over there (spot over there)

9. If you're going down south
And they've no work to do
Then you go north to Chicago
Ah ah ah...

10. Well, if it rains, I don't care, don't make no difference to me
Just take that street car that's goin' up town

11. You know your culture from your trash
You know your plastic from your cash
When I lose sight of the track
You know the way back
But I know you

12. Yeah, the other night I lay sleeping
And I woke from a terrible dream
So I called up my pal Jack Daniels
And his partner Jimmy Beam

It's BeBe's turn to answer the questions tonight, but a thunderstorm is aimed at us, and BeBe is already under the computer desk again. I will do my best. This is where I would stare at the ceiling and whistle, if I could whistle. How about those Cubs?

Neither of us ever have gone to a swimming pool or any lake bigger than the one the sky makes in our backyard sometimes. We've never been on a boat. We don't have life vests or even floaties. We don't know what would happen if we suddenly had to swim. The closest we come to swimming is when we splash around in our bubbly baths at the Bed and Biscuit. So, we don't sing about water much. If you ever have a day with songs about dog kibble and chewie sticks, we will have many, many more answers. Some of them might be right.

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, by that guy who was friends with that other guy.

BeBe found this picture this morning, but at first she didn't think it was exactly what you asked for. She kept going back to this little puppy, though. I submit to you that this photo encapsulates an entire world of indoor wetness and the emotional reaction of a lone, terrified, very-very sorry small pup who has no alibi and nowhere to turn. In that sense, it's a far more inclusive and definitive photo than any other that depicts random moisture and a dog that says "Oops."

I'm thinking about going to law school.

Noah's Ark

1. You can run but you cannot hide;
this is widely known
And what you plan to do with your foolish pride
when you're all by yourself alone
Shower the People - James Taylor (Prescient points to Mecca Radio for playing this last night...)

2. Whenever he calls my name
So slow, sweet and plain
I feel, yeah, yeah, well I feel that burning flame
Heat Wave - Martha & the Vandellas/Linda Ronstadt (The Ronstadt version made my cover song countdown I posted on my blog last year...)

3. Do you remember when we met
That's the day I knew you were my pet
Sea of Love - Phil Phillips or The Honeydrippers (The Speedo Man version did not make that countdown...)

4. I don't know why you treat me so bad
Think of all the things we could have had
Love is an ocean that I can't forget
My sweet sixteen I would never regret
Take Me To The River - Talking Heads/Al Green

5. Doing alright
A little jiving on a Saturday night
And come what may
Gonna dance the day away
Driver's Seat - Sniff N The Tears

6. Come on you little fighter
No need to get uptighter
Come on you little fighter
And get back up again
It's Raining Again - Supertramp

7. Come on and dance guys grab a girl don't wait make the twirl
It's your world and I'm just a squirrel
Trying to get a nut to move your butt to the dance floor
Gonna Make You Sweat - C&C Music Factory (Prescient points to my radio station for playing this on my way into work last night. BTW, this song and Oran Juice Jones' "The Rain" are the only two pop hits from my generation to mention a squirrel in the lyrics... and I could've used them both in this game had I been so inclined...)

8. I could tell she liked me from the way she stared (the way she stared)
And the way she said you missed a spot over there (spot over there)
Stacey's Mom - Fountains of Wayne (I hate this song, but love most of the other songs I've heard from this group...)

9. If you're going down south
And they've no work to do
Then you go north to Chicago
Ah ah ah...
When the Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin (Probably heard it before, but all LZ songs run together in my mind...)

10. Well, if it rains, I don't care, don't make no difference to me
Just take that street car that's goin' up town
Black Water - Doobie Brothers

11. You know your culture from your trash
You know your plastic from your cash
When I lose sight of the track
You know the way back
But I know you
Steam - Peter Gabriel

12. Yeah, the other night I lay sleeping
And I woke from a terrible dream
So I called up my pal Jack Daniels
And his partner Jimmy Beam
I Drink Alone - George Thorogood & The Destroyers (A song that will always make me think of one of my former co-workers, who is now drinking alone in whatever constitutes the afterlife...)

Image Bonus: Show me something that's all wet... - The wide variety of funny, cute and preverted you all provided far exceeded my expectations! In a very tough decision, I went with elwood's wet wifebeater photo for the IBB...

Shoot! Forgot!

Oh well.
