Gravitational waves detected

#1 Post by jarnon » Thu Feb 11, 2016 4:33 pm

Cosmic breakthrough: Physicists detect gravitational waves from violent black-hole merger

Gravitational waves were predicted 100 years ago by Einstein's theory of general relativity. The waves that were detected were created by the collision of two massive black holes. This is an awesome scientific achievement, comparable to the discovery of the background radiation from the Big Bang in 1964. Nobel Prizes to follow.

Wow. When I was a freshman at Caltech more than 37 years ago, I remember Kip Thorne talking about plans to build the LIGO. I'm glad to see that it happened and that its detection efforts were successful. --Bob

It's good to see that at least the Presidential debates are advancing our understanding of science...

Donald Chump would say, "This discovery is YUUUUGE!!!" Obama would point out that the collision started during the Bush administration and would have been much worse if the Republicans were still in charge.

I guess this means gravitons are real.

I always thought that mergers led to big ripples and waves, at least on Wall Street. :P

Gravitons may be real. I'm waiting for gravitoffs. Kind of like upsidaisium.
