I thought the same thing, and that made it seem more likely to me, except I'm not sure what the age limit for very deep sea diving is. Hillary woulda been in his 60s then, maybe well within the limit, I dunno. I googled it after I posted, and it turns out that the way the Hillary/Armstrong expedition to the North Pole succeeded was also with some very sophisticated and state-of-the-art equipment -- an airplane capable of cold weather flight, landing on a giant ice sheet, and returning with the passengers still alive. After reading about it, it sounded like the North Pole and deep sea diving were about equally likely. We know that Kilimanjaro would have been within Hillary's reach, and the Sahara about equally inhospitable for both of them. Tough question, I was gone no matter what came up on the 50/50.

I figured Hilary would have made a run at Kilimanjaro in an effort to hit the top peak in all seven continents, a popular mountain climbing challenge. And it didn't seem too unlikely that Armstrong would want to give it a try.
