SAG Nomination Surprises

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Wed Dec 09, 2015 1:56 pm

The Screen Actors Guild announced its nominations and since its members vote on the Oscar nominations, it may or may not be a forerunner (Movies I've seen are marked with an asterisk)

Best Actor

Bryan Cranston (Trumbo)*
Johnny Depp (Black Mass)*
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)
Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs)*
Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl)

I think Depp is a bit of a stretch here. No Matt Damon for the Martian, which may well kill its chances for Oscar love other than technical categories. No Steve Carell for The Big Short as had been rumored. No Michael Caine, which hurts his chances of getting an Oscar nomination in six consecutive decades.

Best Actress

Cate Blanchett (Carol)
Brie Larson (Room)*
Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold)*
Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn)"
Sarah Silverman (I Smile Back)

I Smile Back was dumped in one remote theater here for one week so I never got to see it. I doubt Silverman will get an Oscar nomination out of this. Big surprise not to see Jennifer Lawrence here for Joy. Brie Larson should be the heavy favorite for the Oscar.

Best Supporting Actor

Christian Bale (The Big Short)
Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation)
Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies)*
Michael Shannon (99 Homes)*
Jacob Tremblay (Room)*

Hollywood loves kid actors, so expect to see Tremblay get an Oscar nomination. Big surprise not to see anyone from Spotlight here, either Keaton or Ruffalo. No Tom Hardy for the Revenant, also a surprise. No Robert de Niro for Joy. No Syvester Stallone. Good catch by the Guild to nominate Shannon who was electrifying in a little seen movie.

Best Supporting Actress

Rooney Mara (Carol)
Rachel McAdams (Spotlight)*
Helen Mirren (Trumbo)*
Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)
Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs)*

Mirren's nomination bodes well for her chances of getting an Oscar nomination in this role. Nominating Rachel McAdams but not her male co-stars is a surprise.

Ensemble

Beasts of No Nation
The Big Short
Spotlight*
Straight Outta Compton*
Trumbo*

I don't know how the got Straight Outta Compton in here.

I've seen one more solar eclipses than I've seen of those movies.

I've heard of exactly twice as many of those as I've seen solar eclipses.

I've seen trailers for Joy and I'm looking forward to seeing the movie around Christmastime. --Bob

Disappointed on behalf of Philadelphia actors for no Stallone.

Looking forward to Trumbo and joy. NOT looking forward to seeing The Spotlight, although I should.

I've seen Woman in Gold, on DVD borrowed from the library after being on a considerable waiting list. Hard to believe that's still one of this year's films. Some of those haven't even been released yet, have they?

That's the only one I've seen of any with nominated actors. Got it through Netflix. I hope PSM has seen it.

That's the only one of the lot I've seen; Mrs. Spiff wanted to see it -- I was already familiar with the story (albeit Mrs. Spiff was a bit dismayed with what happened in real life after the end of the movie). Mirren was very good, very convincing in her role, not sure it's worthy of the nomination though. I actually was more impressed with Ryan Reynolds' role as the young lawyer representing her. It was definitely out of character for what he usually plays, but he was very good conveying the role of someone who could have been (and likely was) intimidated by the "David v. Goliath" nature of what he was doing.
