Heck, they almost did it a few plays before they ultimately did, when Odell Beckham tried to be David Beckham and kick a dead football (five-yard penalty for delay), making it fourth and seven instead of fourth and two; at least he redeemed himself on the next play by catching the ball for a first down.
Of course, the announcers saying right before the kick how he had made the last "x" number of kick from that range was the kiss of death.

Just when I thought I'd seen every possible way the Giants could lose a game, they came up with another.

Last night, the Giants just decided to lose the old-fashioned way: Throw three interceptions and not bother to play defense for the entire game.

You forgot the Giantesque twist to that game: Get your best player suspended before this game by getting into fights the week before.

Now they go into the season finale with the Eagles, a team that has rivaled them for amazing shows of ineptitude this season but somehow managed to win a game in New England.

Here's what it boils down to. Win, and the Giants get to play a game in Seattle next year. Lose, and they get to play the Rams in London next year. Knowing the Giants, they'll probably win this game just for the heck of it.

I don't know about that. They might find a way to lose against the Eagles, too. This defense couldn't be any more uninterested in being on the field if Abe Vigoda went streaking across the 50-yard line.

My first father-in-law, long deceased, would be spinning in his grave had he not seen enough New York Football Giants suffering in his years.

He was a long-time season ticket holder, going back to the Polo Grounds days, and followed them through all of the various stadia until the Meadowlands (near where he lived -- Rahway, NJ). He remembered attending the OT loss to the Colts in the NFL Championship -- the first OT game -- and the last season he went to was the Year of Pisarcik. He retired and moved to the Tampa area, although he technically still had season tix (he sold them at cost to a buddy of his back home).

Sadly, the year he died was the year the Giants won the Super Bowl in Tampa; his tix actually got picked in the lottery to get a Super Bowl ticket, but his widow declined them.

Y'know, I've been a Giants fan all my life. I'm like 4th or 5th in line to inherit my uncles' season tickets, which used to be my Grandad's. (Not like I have a realistic prayer of ever getting them, but still.)

They've been pretty inept all season. I get that.

But, really. My eldest turned eight years old today. He's seen them win the Super Bowl twice in his lifetime. No other team has won more than one in the last nine years.

I've seen 'em win 4 since I graduated from high school. Only other team that's won that many over the same period is the Patriots.

Sure, they've been bad lately, in a kind of frustrating way. But they're not the Eagles. They're not the Cowboys. They're not the offensively-named team from Washington. They're not the Jets.

The Giants are a very strange team. They've had their share of dreadful teams and crushing, mind boggling losses over the years and they seem to fail far more years than they have any success. Counting this year, they've only made the playoffs once in the last eight years.

But when they do get a chance they seem to pounce on it. Their record in conference championships and Super Bowls is an incredible 9-1.

That's what it means to be a Giants fan... many, many, many valleys but when they approach the peaks, the view is usually spectacular.

There will be at least one new coach on the sidelines for the Eagles-Giants game Sunday. The Eagles fired Chip Kelly today. Pat Shurmur will coach the team Sunday.

I know when a college team fires their coach shortly after being beat by Bama, it's said the outgoing coach was Sabanated. Somehow, I don't think Grudenated has the same cache.

The Kelly firing was definitely ham-fisted. Apparently the players found out the same way we did -- through the media; some players found out when reporters contacted them to comment on the firing.

And are considering firing the head coach. I guess we are a real team now!
