When I cited to it, the article said he had been sentenced to "a maximum five years" and didn't mention that he could have received up to 15. From the way the article was written I interpreted that as meaning that five years was the maximum he could have received (what it actually means is that he could serve part of the sentence under house arrest instead of in the slammer). The prosecutors in the Pistorius case plan to challenge the verdict and the sentence. I guess the laws regarding double jeopardy aren't the same in South Africa as they are here.

Report: Oscar Pistorius to be released from prison, placed on house arrest

Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius will be released from prison and put on house arrest in August after serving only one-sixth of his five-year sentence for the killing of his girlfriend, reports the BBC.
Prison officials made the recommendation on the basis of Pistorius' good behavior in jail. Pistorius was eligible for release under South African law after serving a portion of his sentence.
Pistorius, 28, has been jailed since October, when he was found guilty of culpable homicide but not guilty of murder in the Feb. 14, 2013, shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The board cited a clarification on Pistorius' sentence that was issued by South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal three days ago, according to the statement.
On Feb. 14, 2013, Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp, a model and law student, in his bathroom. He had told the court he believed Steenkamp was an intruder when he shot her several times.
