#1 Post by Vandal » Wed Dec 02, 2015 7:02 am

The 10 most popular girl names of 2015:

1. Sophia
2. Emma
3. Olivia
4. Ava
5. Mia
6. Isabella
7. Zoe
8. Lily
9. Emily
10.Madison

The 10 most popular boy names of 2015:

1. Jackson
2. Aiden
3. Liam
4. Lucas
5. Noah
6. Mason
7. Ethan
8. Caden
9. Logan
10. Jacob

Other trends:
Millennials who use social media are feeling inspired by Instagram filters and tools, naming their children Lux, Juno, Ludwig, Amaro, Valencia, and Willow.

YouTube is influencing parents as well, since they are naming their babies after YouTube stars such as Kingsley (the actor behind YouTube’s “Ask Kingsley”) and Cameron (a Teen Choice Award winner). Kingsley rose 68 percent for girls and 11 percent for boys, and Cameron jumped 13 percent for boys and 19 percent for girls, according to the site.

Video game names are also leaping off screens and onto birth certificates. This year, Joule from the game ReCore increased by 52 percent, Meryl from the game Metal Gear Solid climbed 51 percent, and Rayne from BloodRayne rose 26 percent.

Young adult fiction and movies continue to influence parents. The name Hazel from “The Fault in Our Stars” climbed 52 percent and the name Hermione from “Harry Potter” fame rose 45 percent. However, the name Katniss from “The Hunger Games” seems to have faded from glory, dropping 10 percent.

Parents are also feeling royal in their baby name selections. The name Royalty for baby girls increased by 88 percent. The girl names Duchess and Princess jumped 75 percent and 22 percent, respectively. The boy name Reign, which reality star Kourtney Kardashian named her baby last year, increased by 54 percent. Other hot boy royalty names include Prince, which rose 10 percent, and King, which rose 8 percent.

Just admit your next cat will be named Reign.

I'm surprised Hunter is not on the boy's list. Sure seeing a lot of them.

Gee, name your kid after a cleanser, a missile (or Canadian music award, take your pick), a famous composer (OK) or a drum line (ehh...), a liqueur, an orange, and a tree.

"Hi my name is Lux. Meet my sisters Oxydol and Ajax, and my brothers BonAmi and Comet."

Maybe Charles Shultz was right when he named one of his characters "5". (He's the dancing fool in "A Charlie Brown Christmas" -- the two girls with him are his sisters "3" and "4".)

Let's see... I've named my cats after:

1. A fourth outfielder's nickname...

2. One of my characters who was named after a Bored Buddy's screenname...

3. Something the Bored persona of one of my cats once said in a post...

Naming animals should be fun and creative, though. Naming people should not... there are feelings and future bullies to think about.

One of the problem with "popular" kids names (any era) is that they are too, well, ... popular.

One of the earliest soccer teams I coached (1979) had 12 kids on it (nine on a side, don't ask why). Three were "Jonathan" (not John nor Johnny/Jonny), three were "Christopher" (again, no truncation allowed), two were "Patrick," and two were "Matthew." So, I had 12 kids with six names among them. Somehow I managed to get the right kids to understand who I was talking to at any given time, but I don't know how.

You dang kid. I went to high school with at least one Sophia, Olivia, and Emily. I know an Ava, Zoe, and Lily in the generation ahead of mine. Our student body president was named Jackson, also his father, and there was at least one Ethan and one Jacob, although everybody called him Jake. I went to school with a Logan (from 1991-98)... but that's it.

When will we see all those Hollywood kids names - Moses, Apple, North, Scout, Tuloulah in the top 20?. What are your favs?

The last time my name (Carol) was in the top 10 of girl's names was 1957. 30 more years and it should be back in the list.

Having grown up in Wyoming, I knew several Jacksons, all named after the ski town by the same name, and a Logan, whom I assumed was named for the town in Utah by Mormon parents. Biblical names were popular in every generation.

I have not yet met a Liam, but I have encountered a couple of Aidens in ballet classes in recent years. One is a college freshman and the other is in high school.

1) I grew up in a neighborhood that was largely Irish and Italian. I had contemporaries (or their slightly younger sisters) - Sophia, Isabella, Emma (German and Irish) and Olivia (after deHaviland, her mother's favorite actress).

We had a Maryanne who started calling herself Mia around the time of Peyton Place on TV (and we haven't called her anything else since - at least any proper name).

AND I knew TWO Ava Maries. One Irish and one Italian (she was Ava Maria). I sweartagod.

2) The younger cousin of a boy in our class was a Liam. AND two cousins had Logan (their mother/aunt's maiden name) as a middle name.

3) Trust me, you will NOT find a kid named AMARO amongst any Philadelphia baseball fans.

So, like so much, it goes with your territory.

Some of these names I get, but you really didn't go to school with an Emily or a Jacob? I find that hard to believe.

I find it interesting that Mary and Elizabeth, both of which dominated the girl's list for about a century, are not even in the top ten anymore.

I bet they're still high on the list in the United Kingdom, though. They love their Marys and Elizabeths. It's all about those queens.

Sigh.

My problem with this is it gives me far more questions than answers.

Are Albert and Herbert Otto brothers? Cousins? Twins? Was one of them left back?

Ditto Herbert and Winona Bargainier. Except brother and sister and not brothers. But you knew that.

Why are W.D. Pharis and A.C Tucker ashamed of their names? If they aren't, why are they going only by their initials?

Is Alice Maffett Glass married (gasp)? Why does she have a maiden name when no one else does?

Is Mabel Miracle really one? I think it's her stage name.

But as far as my grade school classes and the kids I shared the most high school classes with.... no, not a single hit on that list.
