This movie uses so many elements of film noir that it's hard not to classify it as an example of the genre. But its main distinction is so incongruously un-noirish that quotation marks are needed. But I'm trying to think of films that could arguably be called the most successful film noir of the 80s: Fatal Attraction, Blue Velvet, Blood Simple, even Blade Runner, and I don't see how that clue fits any of them.

Throwing this out there. Miyoshi Umeki appeared in Flower Drum Song with Nancy Kwan. She also appeared in Cry for Happy with Glenn Ford who was also in Fate Is the Hunter. It seems like this still leaves a lot of wiggle room since actors like Henry Fonda and Paul Newman appeared in dozens of films, so it's pretty easy to get a film with two actors who appeared with Fonda at one time or another in their careers.
Unless you factor in that James Shigeta also co-starred with Umeki in both Flower Drum Song and Cry for Happy. That narrows it down a lot.
