Looks like BJ reads Salon. Some bigot named Scott Eric Kaufman wrote a hateful, convoluted article that came to that conclusion. BJ confused it with actual responsible journalism. This guy should have been a moderator for the CNBC Republican debate.

I just read the letter. It says no such thing. There is a concern expressed about possible refugee/terrorists being able to purchase weapons due to receiving identification documents and cash but no where does it express or make any implications about Texas' or any other gun laws. Just the fact that guns can be purchased. Which they can almost anywhere.

So to be clear, this misquote is nothing more than a disguised attempt at support for Federal gun control. You would think Bob J would be against that, but then he'd have to have read the actual letter to see the false narrative.

Of course it says no such thing. It also doesn't mention that France has very strict gun control laws, but that didn't stop the terrorists from getting the guns they used. It just prevented anyone in that theater that has respect for the law from having one.

Would you support the bill sponsored by Sen Diane Feinstein (D) and Rep Peter King (R) to not let people on the terrorist watch list buy guns? I would expect you would but wanted to ask.

Seems so. I support not letting felons purchase so a known terrorist should not also be allowed. I'm O.K. with background checks on retail sales to establish whether or not.

I know there is a loophole in that personal resales could be to felons or terrorists. But there is also a "loophole" in that felons or terrorists could just break into homes and steal them. Or become drug runners and let the government deliver them.

If you believe a law is going to prevent a terrorist from obtaining whatever they want to accomplish whatever they want to accomplish, then go right ahead. "Darn, I can't go into a stadium and shoot as many people as I can in Allah's name because they just passed a dang law! Perhaps I should forget the whole thing."

I think it's just more mindless pandering to the low information crowd to make it look like she's concerned and doing something, when it won't make one bit of difference and won't solve anything except it will cost the taxpayers more money to try and enforce it.

Actually, I agree with BiT that the TPM article reads more into the letter than what the state representative said, but, nevertheless, it's another case of Republican fear mongering by trying to whip up a frenzy against an easily identifiable group of outsiders instead of taking the right steps to combat actual problems.

What's dangerous about ISIS, beyond what Al Qaeda is/was capable of doing, has been their ability to recruit would-be followers anywhere in the world through social media and other channels. It's highly sophisticated, and it doesn't rely on finding ways to get Syrians into this country.

ISIS didn't exist in 2005. We created ISIS through our mishandling of the Iraq occupation, which created the climate that allowed many otherwise apolitical Iraqis to become targets for indoctrination. It took almost ten years but we wound up with ISIS. Keep thousands of innocent refugees who are far more victims than anything else in equally harsh conditions today and then whoever is president in 2025 will have to deal with what we're creating today.
