A Tale of Two Cabdrivers

I guess it depends on which Muslim cabdriver you get.

This one has gone viral and you most likely have seen it somewhere. Gist is "Muslim taxi driver claims he 'could not pick up fare for hours following Paris attacks and broke down in tears after passenger spoke out against Islamaphobia"

This might be true-It is kind of neat how it hits the dominant liberal memes of the weekend but, if so, we are asked to believe that liberal New Yorkers who ride with Muslim cab drivers all the time and who, probably fall into the #hugamuslim side of the spectrum suddenly were scared of Muslims.

Maybe, just maybe, everybody was home watching the news.

2) This story won't go viral-but this guy wasn't so lucky in his choice of a Muslim cab driver.

The complainant, businessman Moshe Indig, told Arutz Sheva Sunday: "I took a cab from Manhattan to Brooklyn yesterday at 8 PM. I asked the driver to make a phone call. He refused but then relented and put the call on the speaker. When he saw that I was speaking Hebrew, he said: 'I hate the people and the language you are speaking. If I had known that you were a Jew, I would not have given you the call."

"When he dropped me off in Brooklyn I started walking and suddenly he got out of the vehicle and ran toward me and started punching me in the head. I was immediately concerned that he might have a knife or some other weapon, so I hit him forcefully. He grabbed my kippah and my cellphone and ran away."

Indig tried to grab back his belongings but the driver drove off and Indig fell from the car and was hurt. He later filed a police complaint. The cabbie was summoned to questioning and will probably be charged with a hate crime within the next few days.

"I was lucky," Indig summed up. "If he had had a knife, there is no doubt that he would have killed me. His eyes were full of hatred. He turned from a cab driver to a terrorist."<<<<

These stories seem fishy to me. They sound like the kind of BS that political activists disseminate to support their views.

The first one is short on details, but it's hard to imagine New Yorkers refusing to ride in a cab with a Muslim driver. They'd probably end up taking the subway or walking.

The second one makes even less sense. I've ridden in lots of cabs, and I've never heard of a passenger asking the driver to make a phone call for him. Why didn't he just use his cellphone? Also, here's a picture of Moshe Indig (an important figure in the Satmar Hassidic community):



But the cabbie only realized he was Jewish when he spoke Hebrew! Finally, I couldn't find this story on any mainstream website, including the Jerusalem Post, which is far from liberal.

I'll add a story of my own. I'm not a cabbie, but I drive occasionally for Uber. Last winter we had one decent snowfall, and so I set out to earn some bucks. I picked up a group of black passengers who conversed in French. I asked them, “Êtes-vous haïtiens?” They replied, “Non, nous sommes musulmans.” As this was a few days after the Charlie Hebdo massacre, I must admit I was a bit uncomfortable for the rest of the ride. But they were fine passengers and even gave me a tip.

Not as exciting as the stories above, but true.

They should have said, "Nous sommes des musulmans et non des terroristes."
