Moses Malone led the 76ers to the promised land of the NBA championship. RIP, Moses. We'll miss you in Philly.

He was a local product (Petersburg High School). Like the recently-deceased Darryl Dawkins, he went straight to the pros (ABA, because the NBA wouldn't take youngsters then). Reportedly, it wasn't as much for the money -- sometimes not the most reliable in the ABA -- but because he got tired of all the recruiting pressure. I read that he often had to sneak out of his bedroom window to go out socially, because so many recruiters just hung out near his house to put the pressure on him to go to their school.

I also remember a co-worker of many years ago who played high school basketball, the backup center (6'1") as a sophomore when Malone was a senior. The starting center came down with the flu the day they had to play Petersburg High. He said he was so nervous, he got drunk and fouled out in the first quarter.

The local paper (Richmond Times-Dispatch) has a story in today's paper indicating that Malone had seen a doctor earlier in the week after he had a heart-skipping episode during a workout. He was wearing a heart monitor when he died.

They also reprinted/reposted an article from 14 years ago about Malone's high school years locally.

I don't think he'll be able to answer that question...
