I did a very careful check for that one. It came up a lot, and I had to replace selected lyric excerpts a couple of times.littlebeast13 wrote:58. THESE Eyes + 9. Boulevard of Broken DREAMS = 71. HEART

I am following the progress of this one. About all I can do .... not coming up with anything new. I either come up with a song and no singer. Or singer idea but, nope ....
Sigh.
Sigh.

Re: Game #154: Lyrical Labyrinth
It occurred to me at work last night that Boston had to be in this game somewhere, especially with "More Than I Can Say" in the game, and sure enough, there's the city mentioned in #35. Yet we have no "A FEELING" song (What, no BJ Thomas/Blue Swede?), and I can't match up another Boston song anywhere other than "Long Time," but there are two mentions of the word TIME in the titles...

Re: Game #154: Lyrical Labyrinth
You'd think the last few to get solved would be more difficult, somehow.
25. Another SOMEBODY Done Somebody Wrong Song + 82. I Was Made TO LOVE Her = 100. QUEEN (American Pie)

Ha! I was just going to start looking for a Queen song, and checked to see if there'd been any more answers since I last refreshed...
I think that's 40 matches, so just 3 to go...

Re: Game #154: Lyrical Labyrinth
I didn't think this match would work because there were two AWAYs, but it turns out the Kelly Clarkson song is Breakaway, not Break Away:
50. Please DON'T GO + 85. Far AWAY = 8. OASIS (Friends in Low Places)
50. Please DON'T GO + 85. Far AWAY = 8. OASIS (Friends in Low Places)

There is a Boston song, but I had to look it up, so I'll let you find it. (It does use the only unused answer, #99.)littlebeast13 wrote:plasticene wrote:You'd think the last few to get solved would be more difficult, somehow.

Lyrics:
1. I had a friend was a big baseball player
Back in high school.
He could throw that speedball by you,
Make you look like a fool.
2. How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
3. I will not be made useless
I won't be idled with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear.
4. How about a pair of pink sidewinders
And a bright orange pair of pants?
"You could really be a Beau Brummel, baby,
If you just give it half a chance.”
5. Smart and coy, a little crazy,
The kind of face that starts a fight,
Let me tell you ’bout the girl I had last night.
6. Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man.
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave, will you hold my hand?
7. Funky sounds wall to wall
We're bumpin' booties, havin' us a ball, y'all.
8. I'm not big on social graces,
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis.
9. I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone.
10. Yellow cab, gypsy cab, dollar cab, holla back
For foreigners it ain't for, they act like they forgot how to act
Eight million stories, out there in it naked
City is a pity, half of y'all won't make it.
11. If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you.
12. Well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash
As we fell into the sun
And the first one said to the second one there,
“I hope you’re havin’ fun.”
13. Who can take tomorrow,
Dip it in a dream,
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream?
14. If you should awake in the still of the night
Please have no fear
For I'll be there, darling, you know I care
Please give your love to me, dear.
15. Laying out another lie,
Thinking 'bout a life of crime,
That's what I'll have to do
To keep me away from you.
16. There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is
The bitter sting of tears.
17. If you could see what I have seen, oh-oh-oh-oh,
Broken hearts and broken dreams, oh-oh-oh-oh.
Then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh, but you don't care.
18. I can't do my homework and I can't think straight
I meet him every morning 'bout half past eight.

And that's what you've done, too.
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play.

Like a daisy, I'm awake
With no Bromo-Seltzer handy
I don't even shake.

The curtains are closed, the cat's in the cradle
Who would have thought that a boy like me could come to this?
22. My Maserati does 185,
I lost my license, now I don't drive.
I have a limo, ride in the back
I lock the doors in case I'm attacked.
23. You stand in the line just to hit a new low,
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go,
You tell me your life's been way off line,
You're falling to pieces every time,
And I don't need no carryin' on.
24. You talk, talk, talk to me
Your eyes touch me physically
Stay with me we'll take the night
As passion takes another bite.
25. So play, play for me
A sad melody
So sad that it makes everybody cry.
A real hurtin' song
About a love that's gone wrong
'Cause I don't wanna cry all alone.

The party had just begun
The guests included Wolfman,
Dracula, and his son.
27. I need a love that grows
I don't want it unless I know
With each passing hour
Someone somehow
Will be there, ready to share.

Never should be spoken.

Now we're up to talking divorce
And we weren't even married.
29. Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also.
The body they may kill,
God's truth abideth still.
His kingdom is forever.

Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.
31. One night, me with my big mouth
A couple guys had to put me in my place.
When I see those guys these days
We just laugh and say, “Do you remember when?”
32. Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na
Na na na na na na na na.
Hey, that's what I'm living for!
33. Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure.
34. Say, there's a place in New Orleans
That serves fried chicken with turnip greens.
35. Now the first of December was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston.
Though the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting,
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go.
36. Mother told me always to follow the golden rule
And she said it's really a sin to be mean and cruel
So remember if you're untrue
Angels up in heaven are looking at you.
37. If you judge a book by the cover
Then you'd judge the look by the lover
I hope you'll soon recover
Me, I go from one extreme to another.
38. Move your body, oooo baby, you dance all night
To the groove and feel alright.
Everybody's groovin' on like a fool
But if you see me spread out and let me in
Baby just party high and low
Let me step into your erotic zone.
39. Listen boy
It's not automatically a certain guarantee
To insure yourself
You've got to provide communication constantly.

And leave him when he's down.

I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right
That is I think it's not too bad.

And when they pulled them from the floor
Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle
With a couple of pieces gone.
43. The town I live in, the street, the house, the room
The pavement of the city, or a garden all in bloom
The church, the school, the clubhouse, the millions lights I see
But especially the people
That's America to me.
44. Jerk it like you're making it choke
Break it like you're breakin' a code
Drop it till you're taking it lower
Drop it, drop it.
45. Thanks for the times that you've given me
The memories are all in my mind
And now that we've come to the end of our rainbow
There's something I must say out loud.
46. No we don't get depressed
'Cause here's what we call our golden rule:
Have faith in you and the things you do,
You won't go wrong,
This is our family jewel.
47. It's obvious you hate me
Though I've done nothing wrong
I've never even met you, so what could I have done?

We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me.
49. My guard stood hard when abstract threats too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect.
Good and bad, I defined these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow.

I want you to know
That I'm going to miss your love

56. Goodness how they sway it
Uncle Joe, Uncle Jim,
How they pound the mire with vigor and vim.

No matter how I try
Just like the more you give, the more I want
And baby, that's no lie.

But I will never be free, no, my baby, no, no.
You gave a promise to me, yeah,
And you broke it, you broke it.

61. I just ordered up a beer and sat down at the bar
When some guy walked in and said, "Who owns this car
With the peace sign, the mag wheels and the four on the floor?"
He looked at me and I damn near died
And I decided that I'd just wait outside
So I laid a dollar on the bar and headed for the door.
62. I follow you around but you can't see
Too wrapped up in yourself to notice
So you choose to look the other way
Well, I've got something to say.

And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same,
The more you change the less you feel.

Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables
In a restaurant in a West End town,

As it slowly rambles on and on.
No need in bringing ’em back
'Cause they've never really gone.

Filled with sadness, filled with gloom,

Make you look like a fool.

Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?

I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear.

And a bright orange pair of pants?
"You could really be a Beau Brummel, baby,
If you just give it half a chance.”

The kind of face that starts a fight,
Let me tell you ’bout the girl I had last night.

But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man.
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave, will you hold my hand?

Of the edge and where I walk alone.

Where the only water flowing is
The bitter sting of tears.

Damn, I even tried that song, but I was obviously doing Crtl-F from the wrong direction and stopped at "Friday on My Mind"... never made it to Empire State of Mind...
99. PEACE + 10. Empire State OF MIND = 35. BOSTON
So that leaves one more, and we haven't used the Christmas carol yet....

I forgot about #90 somehow. Here are the songs that the titles of the last two have to come from (including the Boston song):plasticene wrote:There is a Boston song, but I had to look it up, so I'll let you find it. #10. EMPIRE STATE OF MIND
#16. DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS
#20. BEWITCHED BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED
#24. THE WARRIOR
#26. MONSTER MASH
#30. THE WEDDING SONG (THERE IS LOVE)
#42. BAD BAD LEROY BROWN
#49. MY BACK PAGES
#55. 99 PROBLEMS
#63. KEEP THE CUSTOMER SATISFIED
#65. WEST END GIRLS
#68. LADY
#70. I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE
#87. POLLUTION
90. THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR
#91. WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE
#92. BREAKAWAY
99. WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT PEACE LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING
We can eliminate #68 (LADY) since LADY also appears in another song title.

The lyrics to #90:
90. There'll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for toasting
And caroling out in the snow.
There'll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories
Of Christmases long, long ago.
Other than Snow (A OHW rapper with a one word hit), I don't see another artist in there anywhere (I did check on The Glories as a hunch, and there is such a group, but they were very obscure). The fact that it's a curious choice for inclusion leads more towards needing it for a title.. since that would be far more restrictive than open lyrics....

The band Stories performed the popular song Brother Louie back in 1973

Damn, another mis-transcription in the consolidation. #90 has been used after all....
So it's practically a free for all...

Dammit, I managed to avoid duplicating 'heart' in the lyrics and ended up with two 'stories.'littlebeast13 wrote:Vandal wrote:The band Stories performed the popular song Brother Louie back in 1973

It doesn't much matter for the numbers, since one will be used twice and one once no matter which way it goes. But because it's my mistake, let me clarify that 'The Most Wonderful Time of the Year' is needed for its title. One word of its title. And the song was a top ten hit in the US.

90. It's the MOST Wonderful Time of the Year + 65. West End GIRLS = 4. PINK (It's Still Rock and Roll to Me)
And done! That was a lot of fun!

OK, I looked it up because I want to hit the sack, but not before I satisfied my curiosity....
I'm not gonna give the answer since I cheated, but it was one of two artists I'd spotted in the cavalcade of lyrics but couldn't come up with a song match for. I'd never heard of the song by title before, and while listening to it on YouTube rings a faint bell, I'd have never connected it to the artist or known what its actual title was...

Now I'll patiently sit out the next 4712389047233 movie games while I wait for another lyrics game...

Glad you liked it! I like doing lyrics games because you don't have to write clues, but it's hard to think of ideas, especially since I don't want to tread on any LS turf.littlebeast13 wrote:HA!

I haven't written a lyrics game in ages myself, but I have been working on one for about a month. Inspired by the lyrics game that you hosted before this one, I'm doing a half-movie and half-music game. I have all of the matches written out. As usual, I just have to write all of the clues.franktangredi wrote:Glad you liked it! I"m with lb, this was one of my favorite games ever, maybe because of the admiration I have for how difficult it must have been to control all the variables.
Speaking of which, I"m still kicking myself for focusing on the 88%, instead of recognizing that the 12 songs that weren't identified in TLITF's consolidation would have formed four triples perfectly. It exemplifies the kind of thinking in this video by YouTube personality, who hosts the Veritasium channel, one of my personal favorites:
