It's been years since I've been able to write this, even for a day at the start of the season, but the New York Mets go into today with undisputed possession of first place in the National League East. I haven't yet calculated their magic number, though. --Bob

The Mets have now expanded their division lead to a game and a half. I am therefore assured they will end the weekend in first place. Let's go Mets! --Bob

Woo hoo! Nine in a row and the lead expands to two and a half games. I'd better enjoy this while I can. No telling how much longer it will last.

It would be really nice, though, if they retain the lead until at least July. I have tickets to see them on July 3 at Dodger Stadium. --Bob

Make that 11 in a row (tying the franchise record) and a four and a half game lead.

For the Mets to duplicate their start in 1986, they now need to lose a game and then win the next seven.

Yes.

I was there (thanks to good luck in a lottery) for Game 7 of the 1988 NLCS. I enjoyed the first inning. The rest, not so much. But back then I was a poor starving graduate student. Now, if necessary, I can afford to pay scalper's prices. --Bob
