Celebrating Peruvian Independence with Isabella

So there I was tonight in OKC, celebrating the 194th anniversary of Peruvian Independence. The actual date was July 28, as I understand it, but the Oklahoma event was held tonight for reasons that probably were explained in Spanish using words that are not in my limited vocabulary. My son's explanation, "Because Peruvian women are always late for everything," may not have been accurate. I was there because the beautiful Isabella (my granddaughter, now 7) was among several performers from Tulsa who did some of the national folk dances. Isabella did the marinera de nortena, with a five-year-old boy in a white suit and a white hat. The dance included a lot of skirt-swirling and fast footwork by Izzy and hat-twirling and measured walking around by her partner. I cannot tell you they did it perfectly -- I could tell you that, but I'd be bluffing -- but I can guarantee you that they danced with great panache and self-assurance. In short, they were just about as cute as two tiny dancers ever need to be.

I'm not the least bit biased. Clearly, it was the best Peruvian Independence celebration I've ever attended.
