Re: Plus One
Congrats on going to the show. I am useless at sports. Maybe a little better at pop culture, but not worth using for that.

Re: Plus One
I'd love to, but I think we know mostly the same things and you could probably find someone who would fill your gaps better. If I were going on the show, I think my first call would be to Roger Craig, because he's good and lives nearby. Maybe Pam Mueller, if she's still at Princeton. I'm trying to think of other people in the area. When KJ was on the show, his plus one was Tony Hightower, who is probably good at pop culture. Andy Kravis is very good. Maybe Brandon Saunders. Some of these folks have already served, so I don't know what the rules are for how many times they can do it. Good luck!

Re: Plus One
I would have recommended goongas if I didn't think it was bad form to do so, but will do now that he's recommended himself. It puzzles me utterly why the show has not picked him, as he's definitely more in their desired demographic (although aging, as we all are, so will some day be out of it). We met on one of my trips to NYC, back when I used to do that just to take the test. He'd be good for not only the areas you'd need but a lot more.
And +1s have a habit of showing up later as contestants. Go, goongas.

I would volunteer, but your gaps are pretty much my gaps.TheConfessor wrote:I'd love to, but I think we know mostly the same things and you could probably find someone who would fill your gaps better. I believe the rules are that you can be a +1 once per season. You can also tape as a contestant and still be a +1 that same season, surprisingly. I believe neither Andy Kravis nor Tony Hightower would be eligible, but Brandon Saunders or Roger Craig would be, and would be very good choices. I think Pam is still on the East Coast but am not 100% sure.
at any rate, break a leg!

Congratulations!
Pop culture and sports are definitely not in my wheelhouse, so I'll pass on the opportunity.

If you're still taking apps. I'll throw my letter of interest. Have passed the audition test a few times and been in the pool, just never called.leszekmp wrote:So ... Ummm... Anyone interested in being a Plus One on July 22nd (possibly extending into July 23rd)? Good at modern pop culture and sports? I have some possible candidates lined up, but wouldn't mind more.

Leszek, I sincerely wish I could offer assistance to you. Alas, as you already know, the sports and pop culture areas are the least watered spots in my mental garden. After my tour of the hot seat, my son said to me, "I thought I was your sports phone-a-friend. Why didn't you call me?" I told him the truth: that I didn't know enough to realize that I was looking at a question about sports.leszekmp wrote:So ... Ummm... I will be rooting for you to take 'em for all they've got -- or all they're willing to put into prize money, anyway.

Notwithstanding Silvercamaro's experience, I think you might be best off not even worrying about having a sports expert. At least not at the expense of subjects that come up far more often. I could be wrong, but my impression is that sports questions typically come up only a few times per year. Has anyone done an analysis of subject frequency?

I dunno about BAM, but Time mag's recent "lists" issue analyzed "catagories you don't need to worry so much about on J!", & "opera" was one, amazingly. I'd still worry.
I'd also worry about sports on BAM, where unlike on J!, you can be "one & done" w/ the wrong-for-you Q.

Re: Plus One
I agree about the sports. It doesn't seem to come up much at all, and if it does, it is a lower level question. But if you don't follow sports at all, a lower level question may be hard for you, I don't know...We didn't see too many upper level questions last season, so it is hard to tell what topics they covered. They seemed to be wicked weed out questions for the most part anyway.

Lower level sports questions will be good for the audience. High level sports questions come up less often, but it would probably be nice if your plus one had at least a little bit of sports trivia locked away.

Thanks to all who offered their services. I've picked up a Plus One who's super in recent Pop Culture, and pretty damn good on lots of other stuff as well.

TCONA conflicts with the Pecos Conference for archaeologists every year. However, this year I may not be going to Pecos, and if that's the case, I'll try to make TCONA.Bob Juch wrote:Great! Break a leg! See you at TCONA?
