Justin Bartek of Columbus died Tuesday at a hospital.

The Colorado County Sheriff's Office says Bartek was critically hurt before dawn Tuesday while discharging fireworks at a fishing spot on the Colorado River.

Authorities say Bartek put a tube-type fireworks device on his chest and lit it. He was with friends when the accident happened.

Officials have ordered an autopsy.

Columbus is 60 miles west of Houston.
There was no report of whether he said, "Hold my beer and watch this," first.

I'm sure he took a lesson from the fool in Maine who died shooting a mortar off his head. That's why he did it more safely and used his chest.

I wonder what type of firework this one was. The one in Maine was a mortar type. I'd wager that guy simply put the round in the tube upside down so when it ignited, instead of shooting out the top it was driven down into the tube causing the explosion and fatal injury.

I didn't know there was a forensic test for stupidity.

I'm sure it's primarily for toxicology -- how drunk he was. Or maybe it's required by law for all unusual deaths.

It could be an issue if there's a question whether he committed suicide or not, which might affect insurance policies.

And the man grew up in Katy, which is due East of Columbus, in far west Houston.
