Spotify "upgrade" screws Android customers

#1 Post by ghostjmf » Tue Jun 30, 2015 6:24 am

Of which I am one.

Search is gone. A forum I found says tapping above "browse" in just the right place will bring it back, but I can't find that right place. A programmer there says it needs to be brought down "X # of pixels", i.e. its a programming error. Obviously this isn't intentional, but will they fix it? Reportedly this has been broken at least 2 days. Last time they disappeared "search" they did it across the board. Do Android people scream loud enough to be heard?

No, I didn't save a previous version of Spotify, as that version had crashed.

Jeemie, you've said you have an Android device; if you use Spotify, check if you still have search.

Spotify (& any other music streaming service) is meaningless w/o search. I don't want or use any of their glossy "features".

Some of the complainees are paying for premium. This is a platform problem, not a way to coax people onto premium. With the teeny 1 speaker in my tablet, piping better sound over it wouldn't help.

Particularly on the day of (or before) that ITunes comes out with a similar service, to much publicity and fanfare.

My son currently has my device, as he smashed his, and we are waiting for the new one.

He's away on a trip, and I won't have access to mine for another couple of days. I'll check it out then (although maybe they'll have fixed it by then).

All the glossy new stuff they've loaded the service up with is probably to compete w/ features Apple will have. The new stuff is to appeal to people in the Apple universe. Leaving us Android users as an afterthought, apparently. Not worthy of the most basic testing, which would have shown "search" to be effectively gone.

I've found some weird site trying to sell people on Spotify which purports to have search. It finds lists of albums by artist. Hey, maybe it will even play them!

Its http://www.listenspotify.com.

You go there, type an artist or whatever (I've only tried it so far for artists, not albums or songs) & it will populate the Spotify app itself with your choice. A very cumbersome workaround. That they'll probably dismantle next.

Since it *is* connected to actual Spotify, I take back what I said about weird sale site. But I found it via googling, not by any "button" on Spotify. It seems left over from some earlier version of Spotify to me.

And oh yeah, unless its just my imagination the new disimproved Spotify is way louder than before, even on my 1 tiny speaker. I'll give them at least that. Stuff from other sites I listen to, Tobar an Dualchais (Scots trad), itma (Irish trad ), the Max Hunter archive (trad from the Ozarks), I sometimes have to plug into amplification or else can barely hear it even through headphones.

I bet if you plug in the "Barry White Channel" it'll blow your earbuds away.

(There's an old radio joke there; a guy I knew at a local station in the 1970s said they had to buy limiters on the turntable amplifiers because Barry White's tunes would play about 40% louder than anything else, and they got a lot of complaints from the listeners about it.)

I never wear earbuds; hate how they feel, that they fall out continually, & fear ear infections. I have these great Koss headphones which cost me $45.00 maybe 20 years ago; the co has a policy by which you send them back non-functional phones (generally one channel has gone out) along with a check for $12.00 or thereabouts & they replace your phones. I've done this many times. Koss has even fancier phones, but I didn't like the ones I tried 20+ years ago because they were too heavy & had (gasp) way too much bass. They may be lighter nowadays but I'd bet they haven't dialed back the bass.

But thanks for the thought!

www.listenspotify.com isn't working for song titles, at least not in the 3 minutes or so I gave it. Oh well. Does work by artist.
