A few years ago, a new writer named Susanna Clarke made a splash with an innovative fantasy called Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. Set in England in the early 19th Century, the premise is that magic is real and well accepted, but more or less extinct. It is studied as an academic discipline, much as Latin is studied as a dead language.
Except for Mr. Norrell, who on his own has rediscovered how to perform magic. Jonathan Strange discovers Norrell and prevails upon Norrell to accept him (Strange) as an apprentice.
I just learned that the book has been produced as a miniseries. The first episode is airing at 10:00 p.m. tonight (9 Central) on BBC America. Better yet, I learned to my surprise that my cable plan includes BBC America. I'm looking forward to seeing this. --Bob

Re: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
I started reading the book a few years back and can't remember if I got bored or what. Must reexamine.
Well, then

It was filmed mostly in Yorkshire, including the Wentworth Woodhouse estate.Bob78164 wrote:A few years ago, a new writer named Susanna Clarke made a splash with an innovative fantasy called Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. It literally put me to sleep yesterday afternoon. I wanted to like it but it was boring as hell.
