Location-west central Minnesota.
Property-220 acres of mixed pasture and cropland. Long axis runs 3/4 of a mile east and west. 1/2 mile deep north and south. I have owned the property since 1990.
Dominant feature-A high central esker (ridge) runs east west through the property.
I describe the property as a little bit of Wyoming range country surrounded by fertile farmland. Similar features continue for about 3 miles west of this property.
The property has a large number of springs. I have always heard that some of these springs have oil. I had never seen that until last night. I was never sure which spring(s) to look at. Dad and a guy that works for us had seen it.
The previous owner's wife was from Texas and had the oil potential of the property studied in some way (1970's) -Not sure what that entailed.
Last night, I saw the oil for the first time. It was a light sheen on top of a spring outlet. The odd thing is that this was a spring located at the far end of the property at least 1/2 mile from the other spring(s).
I have no illusions that there is economic potential of the oil there-but it is still pretty cool.
In 2004-in Spock College V2-I wrote an in-depth paper on the glacial features of the property for a graduate Geomorphology course. I remember thinking that it would be interesting to do hydrologic study of the springs there and so forth.
There has to be some sort of (small) oil reservoir at the depth of these springs from which they bring up the oil.
This is hundreds of miles from any oil/gas production.

Re: A Geologic Puzzle
Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Spock
Poor mountaineer, hunted kudu and rhebok,
Then one day he was walking by a spring,
And up through the ground came the oddest thing.
(Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.)

Re: A Geologic Puzzle
I looked at a paper on Minnesota oil and gas stuff. There was a wildcat well drilled about 40 miles away in the early 1980's-I remember this as it is in the same county. A well driller's log showed a small showing of oil/gas.
The thing that got me most curious/thinking about this is the half mile of separation of oil shows.
