Harry Potter prequel movie coming in 2016

#1 Post by Vandal » Thu Jun 04, 2015 10:37 am

Eddie Redmayne has been set to play Newt Scamander in the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them for Warner Bros. The studio made the announcement late Monday and said the film is slated for worldwide release in 3D and Imax on November 18, 2016. The film marks author J.K. Rowling’s screenwriting debut. David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films and will direct and David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster kid-wizard features, will produce.

The movie’s title refers to a book written by Scamander, a textbook used by Harry Potter and his pals when they attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The new film series takes place 70 years before the Harry Potter films. That franchise was hugely important to Warner Bros, which is eager to get it back. Having Redmayne anchor the new series, with frequent Potter helmer David Yates directing and David Heyman again producing, sounds too promising to not work out.
Link.

It seems a good choice.

I'm sure I'll go to see it, but it will be odd to see a Harry Potter movie without Harry or any of the other characters from the original series. Maybe they'll have a younger Dumbledore.

This book was really short- how are they going to make it a series?

From this article:
The producer said Rowling has no shortage of plot ideas for Fantastic Beasts because she knows Newt Scamander’s history so thoroughly – after all, she created him. “The fact that she’s going to this world means there are stories to tell,” he said. “When I was doing the Harry Potters, what was clear to me is that Jo’s knowledge of this world is infinite. What you read in the books was just the surface of her knowledge. She had notebook upon notebook of stuff. I would call her and say, ‘What’s the sixth use of dragon’s blood?’ and she’d have it at her fingertips.”

The Hobbit was 200 pages and they managed three three-hour movies out of it. Filming Ian Holm or Ian McKellen reading the book wouldn't have lasted nine hours.

OK- I don't think I'm going to be interested in this, though.

Not my types of stories.

Nonetheless, I'm betting on some box office records being set. --Bob

Well, considering the first one made enough money for them to make a Ted 2, that doesn't say much for audiences.
