New Millionaire Host: Chris Harrison

#1 Post by chad1m » Mon Apr 13, 2015 3:45 pm

After Meredith Vieira spent 11 years as host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, the show is now on its third host in three seasons, but he might have the best upside: Seasoned TV veteran Chris Harrison, known for The Bachelor/ette, is taking over this fall for season 14.

Well, at least he's not a comedian.

Uh-oh, we might get "Bachelor Week".

This means renewal for season 14 for the syndie Millionaire. He did host two traditional game shows besides the Bachelorette: Mall Masters on GSN in 2001 and You Deserve It on ABC primetime a few years ago.

Cool! I can watch next season without the host yelling at me.

Chris would be the first game show host they have ever had for the show (Regis may have hosted one years ago, I am not sure).

The Baboo watches the Bachelor all the time so I am exposed to it some while reading on the couch. CH seems like a very personable person who can make contestants comfortable. He also does not seem like a host that wants to make everything about him.
I felt the change

According to Disney/ABC, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Expendables co-star Crews “is unable to continue on with Millionaire due to his successful and demanding film and primetime TV projects.”
Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Terry.

So will Chris Harrison be able to interact with regular people who are there to play a trivia game show instead of engaging in a "reality" romance? Maybe even with boring MAWGs?

I must confess that I was surprise by this implicit renewal announcement. Maybe I'll give the forlorn hope one more try, this summer.

I'll say what I said on the Buzzerblog FB page. When I read the announcement, I originally misread it originally thinking Chris Hanson was hosting. That would've been interesting when they brought out a new contestant if they still had the hot seat.........."Why don't you have a seat over there." :D

The last two hosts weren't either.

I would consider Cedric a comedian. Regis did host a game show years ago called The Neighbors.

So...a new host? How about some changes to the format as well...other than the phone game?

What would you like to see?

For starters, I'd get rid of the Plus One lifeline. I would bring back either the 50/50 or the Double Dip.

I would create an online test like J! does. This would help increase the geographic diversity and perhaps yield some contestants that actually know stuff. After giving the online tests, they could have auditions in regional cities (Chicago, LA, NYC, Atlanta, Denver, or other cities where they could get a large number of people from different areas of the country).

I'd limit the number of WWOQ's to give people a decent shot of actually winning the million. After all, this show is called Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.

We touched on this subject in that other thread regarding Sony, the current owner of the original WWTBAM format. The gist of that is that TPTB are unlikely to go back to any of the classic elements of WWTBAM, because then they'd have to pay licensing fees for them. So any changes will be something "new" that ABC can claim as their own. And I predict any such changes will be reliably bad.

You wouldn't know it from listening to the show's host.

But maybe Chris Harrison can learn the full name of the show? If he doesn't shout at the top of his lungs, he might even have the breath to say it all.

What are the "classic" elements? Unlimited time to answer? Phone game? Easy to hard questions? 50-50, PAF and ATA? Original set?
Other than the phone game, what element would you like reinstated?

According to TheConfessor's post, the Shuffle format is one of ABC's innovations. Personally, I'd like the questions to be in order of difficulty again. Starting with easy questions calms the contestant's nerves and builds confidence, preventing proterotetiphobia™. And knowing which questions are difficult is an immense strategic help. For the unlucky souls who miss an easy question, the designation "llama" will once again be meaningful. ABC could do this and still shuffle the money values, keeping the suspense, followed by jubilation when big amounts are revealed.

But shouldn't the money amounts correspond with the ease of questions? What about the safe banking plateau?

Yes. Fifteen questions of increasing difficulty, with corresponding increasing value. Let the audience cheer actual game play, instead of random events.

The old money tree, the old lifelines, the old Phone Game. Let's play like it's 1999!

Isn't there a comic you should be heaping praise on?

Found Uly, I guess.

That is an awesome comic! Well done!

You cannot party like it's 1999...

You have to be realistic...do you want them to get rid of jump the question?

My dos centavos . . .

There seems to be plenty of time to answer now. As long as you keep talking, it seems they allow plenty of time to reason it out.

I would like a return to the easy to hard topic tree.

For lifelines, I like ATA, JTQ, and +1. Oh, wait . . .

I would hate to see the loss of the "save haven" at Round 2.

The show is dead.

It's just that no one wants to flip off the life support switch.
