New TV Season Update

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Fri May 08, 2015 8:17 am

The new season will be announced next week, but dribs and drabs are coming out now:

Fox has cancelled The Mindy Project; Hulu may pick up new episodes. CW has renewed iZombie.

CBS has picked up Supergirl, based on the DC comic.

Fox has five new series:

Grandfathered: John Stamos discovers he has a son and grandson he never knew about. Josh Peck and Paget Brewster costar.

The Grinder: Rob Lowe plays a TV lawyer (I think a Nancy Grace type), who, when his show is cancelled goes back to his hometown to go into private practice. Fred Savage and William Devane costar.

The Guide to Surviving Life: A comedy. I think the title says it all. Over/under is three episodes.

Rosewood: A closed-end series (read no second season) about a brilliant private pathologist. Morris Chestnut stars.

Scream Queens: A 15-episode anthology about a series of murders on a college campus. I'm guessing each week is about a different case. Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, and Abigail Breslin will be among those on hand.

ABC has cancelled Cristela, Revenge, Resurrection, and Forever. Nashville, Marvel's Agents of SHield and the spinoff Agent Carter will be back.

New shows:

The Muppets: A faux reality-style documentary that looks at the private lives of the various individual Muppets.

Dr. Ken: Ken Jeong as a brilliant physician with a horrible bedside manner. Imagine House with a laugh track.

The Real O'Neals: A family comedy with Jay R. Ferguson and Martha Plimpton whose lives aren't as perfect as they first seem.

The Catch: From Shonda RImes. Mireille Enos of the Killing as a fraud investigator who's been conned by her boyfriend. She solves cases each week while pursuing him over the course of the season.

The Family: The son of a famous politician returns after a 10-year disappearance and he may not be who he says he is.

Of Kings and Prophets: The Biblical story of Saul and David.

Quantico: A group of new FBI recruits go through training. One of them might have masterminded a major terrorist attack.

Wicked City: Police drama centered on a major case in Los Angeles in 1982. Future seasons will take place in different years with presumably different casts.

Untitled Don Johnson show: He's the head of a family working in the North Dakota oil wells.

That makes 15 murders. I wouldn't want to be a student there.

You may get the Fox version of the same thing. They've added another new show, Frankenstein Code, about a corrupt retired cop who's brought back from the dead as a younger man and has to decide whether to reform or remain on the Dark Side.

ABC has also added another show, a new version of Uncle Buck with an all-black cast, including Mike Epps (who's nothing like John Candy in any way whatsoever) as Uncle Buck.

I would have been watching Forever if it weren't up against 2 programs I already watch & if I had a 3rd recording device. I know, you can watch anything these days on the internet (except you have to deal with "wait 8 days" rules for many shows, unless you can list a cable provider; I haven't tried lying, that's an idea). But life is too short. Even for immortals, it appears. I will pretty much watch anything with Judd Hirsch in it if I can possibly maneuver my way to doing it, even if he is playing the adopted son of somebody who appears 40 years younger than him (I know, I know, the guy's immortal).

I was a HUGE Muppets fan as a kid. I can't wait to see the new version of the show. I hope they have guest stars.

I am looking forward to the Jay R. Ferguson-Martha Plimpton show. His Stan was one of my favorite characters on Mad Men.

Fox ordered “Lucifer” and “Minority Report” to series on Friday, adding two more dramas to its schedule.

From executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer and “Sleepy Hollow”creator Len Wiseman, “Lucifer” stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals. “Lucifer” is based on the characters from DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint and also stars Lauren German as Det. Chloe Dancer, Rachael Harris as Kim Martin, DB Woodside as Amenadiel, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Maze, Nicholas Gonzalez as Dan and Scarlett Estevez as Trixie.

Steven Spielberg‘s “Minority Report” is the TV series sequel to the Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell movie from 2002 of the same name and stars Meagan Good, Stark Sands and Wilmer Valderrama. It is written by “Godzilla” scribe Max Borenstein.
This iteration of “Minority Report” is set to take place 10 years after the end of Precrime in D.C., when one of the three Precogs struggles to lead a “normal” human life, but remains haunted by visions the future, when he meets a detective haunted by her past, who just may help him find a purpose to his gift.

Considering how few hours Fox actually has (two hours every night but Sunday, and Saturday is sports programming), it's likely that some of these may be half-season runs like The Following, that share a time slot. It would also appear that The Following and Sleepy Hollow are both goners.

NBC has reportedly renewed Mysteries of Laura. Can you spell "bad idea". Unless they're shipping the demon spawn & hubby off to a remote island for the duration. Relax folks they're only fiction.

ONe game show is cancelled: The syndicated Let's Ask America. THough GSN has two recent low rated originals, It Takes a Church and LIe Detectors, that probably won't get another series.

Roomie has been watching Mysteries of Laura and says the irritating kids are hardly in it anymore. I don't watch anything on NBC.

I am thrilled about Agent Carter being renewed, especially if they do exactly what they did in season 1 with eight episodes as a placeholder for Agents of SHIELD. It had zero fluff. It is my only ABC show.

My only FOX show, Bones, has been renewed. I believe this will be the final season but it has been a good run.

My CBS shows are all already picked up: NCIS, NCIS:NO, and Big Bang Theory.

I really enjoyed The Mentalist as well, and I'm glad they brought it back to wrap it up. However, I'll say that the ending of the previous season would have served as a good finale for the show as well.

Forever had the same type of ending, one that would logically have led into a second season but that gave its fans a sense of closure as it turned out.

And while on that subject, we've been watching ABC's Secrets and Lies this spring, which has turned into rather a juicy soap operatic murder mystery. The finale last Sunday revealed the killer, and I have to give the writers credit for completely fooling me at least, although as they showed during the episode, they dropped a number of cleverly concealed clues along the way. It's apparently been renewed for a second season and pretty much showed what the second season is going to be about

I like Juliette Lewis on the show a lot. It's the first time in a long time she hasn't played a character who isn't some form of redneck trash and her character has grown on me as the show has gone along (also her resemblance to her father is much more striking now that she's in her 40s).

You can see Juliette Lewis in the upcoming summer series "Wayward Pines".

The official Fox and NBC schedules were released today. New developments:

Sleepy Hollow is back on Thursday night this fall; the new version of Minority Report will be on Monday night after Gotham. Lucifer and Frankenstein code will be midseason; no word on when the new 6-episode X files will air.

More about Scream Queens (Tuesday at 9). It's going to be an anthology set around the most popular and snootiest sorority on campus, led by Emma Roberts. However, dean Jamie Lee Curtis says they have to accept all types of pledges and a killer dressed up as a devil starts killing off one sorority sister a week. I'm not sure how this qualifies as an anthology with one killer and one mystery lasting the entire season, but they may feature the "story" of the victim of the week each week, leading up to her demise.

NBC: Other new series this fall for NBC; Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris, a comedy variety show that I'm guessing will be something like the old Ed Sullivan Show but with NPH participating more than Ed ever could.
The Player - Thursday at 10; Wesley Snipes stars as a top notch security whiz who tries to stop high tech crimes while really wealthy people bet on whether he'll be able to do so.
Heroes Reborn - Thursday at 8; Masi Oka and Jack Coleman are back; otherwise it looks like a new cast.
People are Talking: Friday at 8:30. Two couples with nothing going on in their lives spend all their time talking to each other.

Lots of midseason shows on NBC, including the return of Coach, a new comedy about behind the scenes at telenovelas with Eva Longoria, America Ferrera in a workplace comedy set in a superstore (I'm sure LB will love this one), a comedy/drama about a comet about to hit the earth and wipe out all life, starring Rob Lowe, Jenna Fischer, and Megan Mullally, and another NY cop show with Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta.

More importantly, when will Big Brother start this summer? It's usually first week of July, but I thought I read somewhere it'll be late June this year...

Wimpy White Dudes With Guitars Ruined American Idol
American Idol is finally dead, to the delight of those who’ve always hated it, and the relief of those who used to love it. At the peak of its reign, the show was everything to everyone: the launching pad for the pop careers of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Hicks; the linchpin of the Fox prime-time schedule, where it once enjoyed a full 41-episode run; the means by which affable host Ryan Seacrest transformed himself into America’s Most Overemployed Man; and a chance for this nation’s most bankable monosyllabic brands (Coke, Ford) to get even bigger.

Neil Patrick Harris described his variety show a little on a February Inside the Actor's Studio. He said they would be introducing viewers to new and interesting things, and that the audience would be participating.
