Kid brag and a big Woo Hoo!

#1 Post by BackInTex » Wed Apr 15, 2015 8:46 pm

My oldest graduates from college in one month. She is earning two degrees: BS in Marine Biology, BS in Marine Fisheries.

She is graduating in 4 years with a 3.5 GPA.

She got a job offer today from NOAA. She will be a reserve technician for NOAA's survey ships. She will get to live where ever she wants and they will fly her out to the various ports to the ships she will be working on. The current plan is for her to live at home for a while to save some money, get used to the career, and to decide where she might want to live.

Question for those who are federal employees....Does the government allow employees to keep and use their frequent flyer miles for personal use? I tried Googling it but got conflicting information. It seems that at one time they could not (deemed government property if earned through official travel) but I saw signs that those rules may have been changed.

I don't know about frequent flyer miles, but congratulations to your daughter on a tremendous accomplishment.

Congratulations, indeed!

While I might have mixed feelings about many federal agencies, NOAA is not one of them. They've probably been more valuable to scientists over the last 25 years than any agency, including NASA.

Congratulations to your daughter!

Yes, she gets to keep all her government travel miles and can save them for personal use. There was an attempt in the Defense Department years ago to control the use of these miles , but it failed miserably due, wait for it,
Spoiler
red tape
. My wife still has 125k miles on the books from her years of traveling.

That is great news. She can start paying me back. So far I have flown her round trip on my frequent flyer miles to Costa Rica (1st class both ways), Aruba, Connecticut, and St. Thomas. :)

I'm not much of a fisherman. She bought me two large rods for surf fishing for my birthday (last August). They still have the tags on them. I do know where I'll go when I get a weekend off. Just seem to always have other priorities.

I hope she gets posted to the Western Flyer out of Monterey.

Congratulations to your daughter!

So, as a reserve technician, she'll never know where she'll be stationed, from one assignment to the next? Sounds...exciting!

That's kind of how she explained it. And yes, it does sound exciting. I wish I had had something similar when I got out of college.

After years of flying for EPA business, my friend says she can use her frequent flyer miles for personal use, and she might use some of them for family business, like a wedding or funeral, but she'll never use all of them because she hates to fly.

There are lots of deserving charities that she can donate her unused miles to. Just don't let them expire!

Red tape usually dooms all such efforts.

I get to use all the miles I accrue from business travel (which is not much for me, but many employees travel a lot).

And other benefits, like Hilton Honors awards, etc.
