I have heard that Vanna White is on WoF as sort of a parody of game shows which had an attractive woman doing something completely unnecessary. This is from the Wikipedia article for WoF:

There would be afraid of a potential uproar by the viewing public if they ever fired Vanna.

I remember that Vanna came into the contestant's room and did her best tomake us feel welcome and put us at ease. She seemed a very nice person. We didn't see Pat until he walked out onto the stage.
