This will probably come as a shock, but the theme of this game doesn't really have anything to do with the Shakespeare play. It's a more indirect connection. But with 86 of the 88 clues answered, everybody will be blazing through the 50 connections once the theme is finally found.

You're in the ballpark, but I can assure you that the correct answer to this question is way more famous than either Hoffman or Holland. Once you solve this mystery, there will be only one clue that has yet to be guessed and you can start looking to solve the missing links in the Tangredi.

I don't have time to play with this any more tonight, but the three names I would look at are Soleil Moon Frye, Cheers Wakefield, and Bushrod Washington. There can't be any other famous Soleils, Bushrods, or Cheerses, so the Tangredi should involves doing something to the last names of these three (or Moon Frye, if the game works that way) to yield three other last names, and not only three last names but three that we'll realize can only apply to one other first name on the list..

Looking at the names, the only other famous "Nellie" I know is "Nellie Bly" Now her name could be formed by removing letters from Donovan Bailey which could be the purpose of the pastor's hints about "dig deep" and "out of chaos" to indicate that one name is "buried" inside another. However, I'm not sure how that exclude a lot of possible wrong matchups to create other famous people.

I just realized that Smiler hasn't been around in a while. I'm sure that if he saw this puzzle, he'd have the Tangredi figured out in five minutes, much to the chagrin of the other players. If there was ever a Bored Buddy with a bizarre knack for doing that, it'd be him.

I wonder whether the idea is to use consecutive letters spanning a first (, middle,) and last name. Perhaps those consecutive letter need to be anagrammed. But I suspect I'm wrong about this because I expect there would be too many matches without an associated words list. --Bob

Just a couple of farfetched ideas, just to show that I actually have been thinking about this:

Dwayne Hickman could go with Chris Rock if the common link is Johnson. (Dwayne Johnson is The Rock's real name.) There are lots of other famous Johnsons, including several of the first names on this list.

All the Smiths must be first name matches only. Who do we know that have Emmitt, Joseph, Kenny, and Maggie?

Could there be nicknames involved? Professions?

Another famous Nellie is Nellie Fox, since SSS brought it up.
