30. This athlete's modest and academic demeanor has long been the subject of articles on The Onion, which had him doing everything from fielding questions about the 2013 federal government sequester to encouraging his teammates to build up their frequent flyer miles.

Okay, finally tracked this one down:

47. He hosted an innovative puzzle contest in 1984 where the first person who could solve the on-screen detective's mystery and call the telephone number hidden in a safe deposit box somewhere in the United States won $100,000.

Act I of Henry V is mostly taken up with justifying Henry's claim to the French throne. The most famous thing that happens in it is when the Dauphin of France mockingly sends tennis balls to the new King of England. There is a big speech about a kingdom being like a beehive. And the Chorus asks for a "Muse of Fire."

None of that is ringing any bells.

Somebody will get his or her aha moment very soon.

And you're right. #5 and #38 have not had guesses yet. Those two clues are pretty tricky, but they will likely reveal themselves toward the end of the game.

This will probably come as a shock, but the theme of this game doesn't really have anything to do with the Shakespeare play. It's a more indirect connection. But with 86 of the 88 clues answered, everybody will be blazing through the 50 connections once the theme is finally found.

I'm pretty sure the answers all have something to do with fire - from the Muse of Fire and Pastor's "blazing" answer.

I still don't see it.

I have faith in you guys. Keep digging around and you'll figure out how it all ties together. Out of chaos comes order.

No, I haven't given up, and when I get a chance, I'm going to look at all the hints. But I'll be gone most of the day.

I would like to point out that an unusually high percentage of the answers are entertainers -- more than you would expect from a general knowledge puzzle. I suspect that is significant.

Although many of the connections are related to entertainment, all fields of notoriety are ultimately represented. So that part is not really crucial for solving.

There has been talk of connections, of missing links. I suspect that the key is not forming a new name, but something that links the actual people on the list.

Actually, there will be new names formed to connect to names you see on the list above. Obviously, how those names are formed relates directly to the title and all of the hints that I've dropped along the way.

ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS
Identify the 88 people below. Form 50 pairs based on a Tangredi, or hidden principle, that you must discover for yourself. Twelve names will be used twice, each in a different capacity. One name on this list connects directly to the theme.
COMMENTS/POSSIBLE HINTS ALONG THE WAY (possibly significant words in boldface
At least one name needs a correction in spelling, which may or may not make a difference in solving the Tangredi.

You're in the ballpark, but I can assure you that the correct answer to this question is way more famous than either Hoffman or Holland. Once you solve this mystery, there will be only one clue that has yet to be guessed and you can start looking to solve the missing links in the Tangredi.

This will probably come as a shock, but the theme of this game doesn't really have anything to do with the Shakespeare play. It's a more indirect connection. But with 86 of the 88 clues answered, everybody will be blazing through the 50 connections once the theme is finally found.

I wonder if the number 50 is significant in itself.

I wonder if the Tangredi has something to do with hell or the devil. (blazing, notoriety, chaos)

There is no Associated Word list, as we often have when new names are formed. I’m wondering if the 50 names all have the same thing in common, such as all members of the same baseball team.

Unless I'm missing something, it appears that all the first names are different (If you count "Cheers" as Wakefield's first name). That would indicate that the first name of half of these people is somehow matched with something that could be formed by performing an operation on the name of the other half. Again, that would usually mean that there would be an associated word list unless the remaining people are somehow unique.

Just so we can rock this game out of stagnation, I will tell you that you are correct on all assumptions. All of the matches will start off with an available first name plus some derived surname. Obviously, the theme of this game leads to the derivation, but nobody has pinned down the reference yet.

I don't have time to play with this any more tonight, but the three names I would look at are Soleil Moon Frye, Cheers Wakefield, and Bushrod Washington. There can't be any other famous Soleils, Bushrods, or Cheerses, so the Tangredi should involves doing something to the last names of these three (or Moon Frye, if the game works that way) to yield three other last names, and not only three last names but three that we'll realize can only apply to one other first name on the list..

Just a thought here.

Looking at the names, the only other famous "Nellie" I know is "Nellie Bly" Now her name could be formed by removing letters from Donovan Bailey which could be the purpose of the pastor's hints about "dig deep" and "out of chaos" to indicate that one name is "buried" inside another. However, I'm not sure how that exclude a lot of possible wrong matchups to create other famous people.

I just realized that Smiler hasn't been around in a while. I'm sure that if he saw this puzzle, he'd have the Tangredi figured out in five minutes, much to the chagrin of the other players. If there was ever a Bored Buddy with a bizarre knack for doing that, it'd be him.

I wonder whether the idea is to use consecutive letters spanning a first (, middle,) and last name. Perhaps those consecutive letter need to be anagrammed. But I suspect I'm wrong about this because I expect there would be too many matches without an associated words list. --Bob

Just a couple of farfetched ideas, just to show that I actually have been thinking about this:

Dwayne Hickman could go with Chris Rock if the common link is Johnson. (Dwayne Johnson is The Rock's real name.) There are lots of other famous Johnsons, including several of the first names on this list.

All the Smiths must be first name matches only. Who do we know that have Emmitt, Joseph, Kenny, and Maggie?

Could there be nicknames involved? Professions?

Another famous Nellie is Nellie Fox, since SSS brought it up.

A quick bit of news: I'm catching a flight down to Charlotte, NC, in about 4 hours. I will be gone for a few days. I don't know yet if I'll be able to access the Bored through my cellphone, but in case I don't, you'll know why. (There are no clues in this post.)

You never know. Somebody could take a second look at the players' comments and figure out if somebody is on the right track.

And yes, I am reporting safely from North Carolina. Thank you, Google Chrome. :)
