Argh! He gets a question that highlights "backward-written spells" and included a name with nonsense spelling, yet he doesn't bother to figure out if the name might spell something backwards?

Okay, I'll give him a huge benefit of the doubt here and say that he got confused by the question writers' bad grammar. Because they said "spells" instead of "spelling", maybe he was thinking in terms of a Harry Potter spell.

Assuming he has any familiarity with movies--and he did say he was an actor--he could surely eliminate Rocky and Silence of the Lambs as being much more recent. Maybe he didn't know Ben-Hur was made later, but everything about Casablanca sets its filming during WWII.

Q2: It upset me a lot that he didn't even try to spell "Esio Trot" backwards. Since I'd never heard of this book, I'm guessing the audience got it by spelling, not familiarity, too.


Q4: It upset me even more that he never tried the Roman numerals. I don't claim to be expert at them, but could see this wasn't a date in the Ben Hur days. And the"42" at the end should have been clear even to non-experts at them.

Okay, I'll give him a huge benefit of the doubt here and say that he got confused by the question writers' bad grammar. Because they said "spells" instead of "spelling", maybe he was thinking in terms of a Harry Potter spell.

No benefit of the doubt is warranted. The writer's grammar was correct. They said "spells" because they meant spells, which were part of the plot. This guy was just utterly clueless, ignoring the obvious giveaways in two easy questions.
