Quick review: Fifty shades of sh**ty.

At one point, Christian Grey says about himself, "I'm fifty shades of f****d." So are you if you waste your time and money on it.

It took in $81 million over the weekend. The only good news about that is that people who don't know what to do with their money now have $81 million less of it to waste in the future.

This review will be so much fun to write.

Two of my bridge buddies were planning to go, and I wished them well. I told them that for me, a plot was a basic requirement for any movie I watch. Sandy said, "Nah, I don't need a plot." I heard over and over again that the book didn't have a plot, and that was enough for me. I look forward to her review.

We chose to see "Kingsmen". Fairly entertaining.

As to FSOG - I read the first book. Didn't bother with the predictable poor writing of the next two. And while I understand the economics of movie theater ratings, if they wanted to accurately handle the subject matter they should have gone ahead and made the movie fit into an x rating. Or Nc17 or whatever it's called now.

We actually chose to go to the theater yesterday, an event that is becoming rarer for us these days. Of the movies available at the theater on our side of town, we chose American Sniper over Black or White on the notion that some movies are intended for a room-sized screen, while others fit comfortably on a TV screen.

I mostly concur with others about American Sniper. I think Clint Eastwood has become really good at making this type of movie, and I think Bradley Cooper did Oscar-worthy acting. I thought the movie showed very clearly what the consequences are of the weaponization of humans. I thought the exposition of Chris Kyle's upbringing, and his dad's views on sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs was much, much more believable than The Blind Side's ludicrous plot device of some test that Michael Oher supposedly took that showed he scored highly on wanting to protect his family.

Those who are criticizing the depiction of Chris Kyle as too positive, well, that complaint is generally true of all Hollywood movies. When you only have 2 hours to tell a story, you tend to leave out all the details that don't advance the plot. But if you don't think America needs her Chris Kyles, I think you're wrong. We not only need our guardians, we need to protect them as much as they protect us.

And therein lies the economics of the movie ratings; a lot of chains don't want to carry NC-17 films because of the stigma; in fact, in some areas it's just plain illegal.

I did find an interesting news story this past week that the greatest advanced ticket sales for FSOG was in Mississippi.

Of course, we didn't protect Chris Kyle, and I'm not just talking about the day he died.

He never got the help he needed when he finally got back from Iraq, notwithstanding the nice little spin the movie put on it. Just ask Jesse Ventura.

And I'm not part of Michael Moore's crowd vilifying him. I don't see how it's "moral" to blast people to bits with drones or aircraft and "immoral" to blast those same people to bits with a lot more precision and judgment involved with a high powered rifle from a lot closer distance.

Chris Kyle never put his demons behind him, and neither the left nor the right cares to discuss this because it won't fit into either of their ready talking points.
