Re: Say it ain't so, Jo........
I've had a generally good opinion of Mr. Stewart until I saw the Sunday Morning interview with him. They did it months ago, but I'm just catching up on old tapes. Anyway, since I don't have cable I can only watch his show when visiting people who do, or when clips get excerpted by other shows.
But during this interview, interview being done by Mo Rocca, who used to work for Stewart on Stewart's show, Rocca is consulting his own notes & Stewart grabs a piece of paper from him & says "oh, your paper has little suns on it" with extreme sarcasm (paper actually has one little sun on it) & starts to riff on that with same sarcasm he uses on idiot politicians etc. Except he's now doing it to Rocca, his former colleague & employee & presumably at least some kind of friend, & it doesn't sound so good. Not to me, & I'm no stranger to sarcasm. The Sunday Morning program using their symbolic sun, the one they sign on with, & end segments with, using stylized versions, etc, on their stationery isn't such a great leap. Or apt target for Mr. Stewart's wit. Rocca explains that they stylize the sun logo to fit various topics, & Stewart then says, still sarcastic, that "you can have your viewers send in stylized versions for this segment". Which they did end the segment with. And the suns were a lot nicer than Stewart had been to Rocca.
The Sunday Morn voice-over said that "we can excuse Jon Stewart for not getting up to watch our 9:00am Sunday show because he's so busy doing thus-&-such". But they also, I noticed, kept their camera, whenever Rocca & not Stewart was speaking, focused on Rocca as seen past the back of Stewart's head. Where there is a small but obvious bald spot. Now, come on, they can't have been using only that one camera angle. There are ways to combat sarcasm that aren't even verbal.
