All are right except two.
One you shouldn't call cheif, unless you take out an eye - of course it might all depend on how you stress the part of the clue, if you have the chance.
May I tell you that girl that you selected isn't correct - but this is my screw-up - the quote should have been "Oh, yes. But what if it connects them to something bigger, like drugs, or murder!?!" (I used the line before this line in the quiz).

C37. Madonna based her book 'Sex' on a fictional character named after this actress' first name, inspired by her and her character in L'Atalante.
DITA PARLO

Hmmm. She and Jean Gabin both being on here calls to mind one of my favorite moves, Grand Illusion. Which also feature Erich von Stroheim, who directed Greed. Probably meaningless.

COMPLETE CONSOLIDATION

#80 Post by franktangredi » Sun Feb 08, 2015 12:40 am

Now that I've cheated my way through most of the unanswered questions, here's the WHOLE FREAKIN' THING:
Create a set of triplets - one from each of the 3 lists (1 from A, 1 from B and one from C) based on a Tangredi that you have to figure out.
The solution will contain a total of 200 triplets. Note that in 2 cases the same 3 elements in a triplet will be used twice because the meaning of the triplet (even though they have the same 3 values) - they are formed for different reasons. All of remaining 194 triplets will be a unique group of 3 elements.

Clearly many elements in each list will be used multiple times.
From list A: 18 answers will be used 2 times, 7 will be used 3 times, 5 will be used 4 times, 3 will be used 5 times, 2 will be used 6 times, 2 will be used 7 times, 1 will be used 8 times, 1 will be used 11 times and 3 different answers will be used 10 times. The remaining 32 answers will be used only once.
From list B: 22 answers will be used 2 times, 7 will be used 3 times, 9 will be used 4 times, 1 will be used 5 times and 1 will be used 13 times. The remaining 84 answers will be used only once.
From list C: 18 answers will be used 2 times, 4 will be used 3 times, 5 will be used 4 times, 1 will be used 5 times, 1 will be used 6 times, 1 will be used 8 times and 1 will be used 13 times. The remaing 98 answers will be used only once.

Ah, so it's Marlo Thomas rather than Elaine May.

The "Chief" thing indicates somebody who played Perry White.

Re: COMPLETE CONSOLIDATION

#82 Post by frogman042 » Sun Feb 08, 2015 8:50 am

Every entry for A is correct.
All B's are correct except 1 now (a subsequent post by Frank fixed the other error).
All C's that have answers are correct except one.
franktangredi wrote:Now that I've cheated my way through most of the unanswered questions, here's the WHOLE FREAKIN' THING:

With this many names, it's inevitable that many of the actors on List B will have co-starred at some point with actors on List C.

The two Japanese actors, Akira Terao (List B) and Mitsuko Baisho (List C), most notably appeared together in Kurosawa's Dreams. And I can't help but think that Jean Gabin and Dita Parlo belong together because of Grand Illusion, the best film either of them ever made. Grand Illusion is linked to Greed through Stroheim, but I don't see any similar link to List A via Dreams.

That's all I got.

Ooh, wait! I didn't look far enough into the cast of Dreams. Martin Scorsese was in that movie!

So Martin Scorsese, director of A43. RAGING BULL was in Dreams, which co-starred B34. AKIRA TERAO and C87. MITSUKO BAISHO.

And Erich von Stroheim, director of A20. GREED, was in Grand Illusion, which co-starred B41. JEAN GABIN and C37. DITA PARLO.

If I find a few more of these, I think we've got it!

Okay, that's definitely the Tangredi. I looked up Sidney Lumet's film acting career to confirm that he was in Dead End. I was wrong -- he only did it on Broadway -- but it turns out he did do the movie version of One Third of a Nation, which starred -- of all people -- Sylvia Sidney and Leif Ericksen.

I'm going to stick to ones I know off the top of my head for now, but this is it. For the sake of future consolidations, how about using this format for matches?

A43. RAGING BULL (Martin Scorsese) + B34. AKIRA TERAO + C87. MITSUKO BAISHO = Dreams

A20. GREED (Erich von Stroheim) + B41. JEAN GABIN + C37. DITA PARLO = Grand Illusion

A6. ALL THAT JAZZ (Bob Fosse) + B59. KATHERINE GRAYSON + C47. HOWARD KEEL = Kiss Me, Kate

A67. MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (Sidney Lumet) + B74. SYLVIA SIDNEY + C71. LEIF ERICKSEN = One Third of a Nation

Possible partial:

Brother From Another Planet = John Sayles = Eight Men Out = John cusack and ??

BUT Sayles is in many movies. This could be wrong

OK, I'll start at the top of List A, then.

A1. FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH = directed by Amy Heckerling, who appeared in Into the Night with B54. JEFF GOLDBLUM and C86. MICHELLE PFEIFFER.

A3. DINER = directed by Barry Levinson, who also appeared in three B47. MEL BROOKS films--High Anxiety, History of the World: Part I, and Silent Movie--as well as Quiz Show (which Melly just mentioned).

A4. MEN IN BLACK = directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

A7. JERRY MAGUIRE = directed by Cameron Crowe, who appeared in American Hot Wax with B8. JAY LENO and C69. LARAINE NEWMAN.

A8. NINE TO FIVE = directed by Colin Higgins, who also appeared in Into the Night with B54. JEFF GOLDBLUM and C86. MICHELLE PFEIFFER.

A10. L.A. CONFIDENTIAL = directed by Curtis Hanson, who appeared in Adaptation. with B7. NICOLAS CAGE and C80. MERYL STREEP.

A15. THE ELEPHANT MAN = directed by David Lynch, who appeared in Dune with B12. SEAN YOUNG and C16. BRAD DOURIF.

A24. GOOD WILL HUNTING = directed by Gus Van Sant, who appeared in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back with B9. WILL FERRELL and B26. BEN AFFLECK... but I don't see anybody on List C who was in that movie.

A26. TERMS OF ENDEARMENT = directed by James L. Brooks, who appeared in Real Life with B71. ALBERT BROOKS and C21. CHARLES GRODIN.

That's all I'll do right now. I'm needed elsewhere.

Yes - that is the Tangredi - if I can paraphrase the currently formulated Tangredi - the director of the movie in list A appears in a movie as an actor in a movie with someone from B and C - but the actual Tangredi is slightly more specific. As a result 2 of the completed matches are incorrect because there is a general rule that is part of the Tangredi that those two incorrect matches violates. I'll let you try to figure out the more specific Tangredi - if you can see what the 2 incorrect ones have in common (if I didn't put in the unstated restriction, there would be significantly more triples in this already fairly large quiz).

frogman042 wrote:Yes - that is the Tangredi - if I can paraphrase the currently formulated Tangredi - the director of the movie in list A appears in a movie as an actor in a movie with someone from B and C - but the actual Tangredi is slightly more specific.
Could the rule be that a director can't be on here for appearing in one of his own movies? I would like that rule. That would eliminate Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Taxi Driver.

BUT Sayles is in many movies. This could be wrong
Based on the new rule, it would have to be a movie Sayles didn't direct. Assuming I'm right about the rule.

Updated consolidation coming up.

Yes - that is the other part of the rule - the director can't be in their own movie - and those were the two incorrect movies.
