Coming Soon: The Right Hand Rule
Breaking news (you heard it here, first)!
I have reached a contract agreement with Second Wind Publishing to publish my middle grade mystery, The Right Hand Rule, in Fall 2015/Winter 2016. This book can be described as a combination of The Breakfast Club and The Big Bang Theory and Clue!
Blurbage:
Ziggy Zygmont is always last for roll call, which gives him an interesting perspective on life in middle school. When he and three other science fair winners, Amy, Marshall and Amanda, meet at their school on a Saturday morning, they think it's to get ready for the regional science competition. Their unusual science teacher, Mr. Froth, has other ideas. He devises an elaborate training session requiring them to locate him somewhere in the school.
But when the building is taken over by curious Mayans and Mr. Froth is taken prisoner, Ziggy's resourcefulness is put to the test. He and the others must use their unique science skills and work together as they battle a Mayan War god, the Dark Rift and each other to find and save Mr. Froth.
This publisher is a big upgrade from my previous publishers and not just because they are (apparently) solvent. This book will have a print run, will be available in book stores and will be returnable (I made sure it's in the contract). This doesn't mean it will be in every Barnes & Noble in the US, of course, but my local B&N will be happy to order them for a signing and return the rest, just like every other book in their store. This was the main selling point of this press.
I am acting as my own agent for this, so I made some favorable changes to the contract and Mike the publisher agreed to them. The royalty rates are in line with industry standards (10% of cover price for print and 35% of retail price for digital) and they have a decent marketing plan.
Another interesting twist to this is that the publisher is also interested in (possibly) re-publishing Dizzy Miss Lizzie and Center Point. Let's not tell him that Lizzie is a pub killer, okay. It will be our little secret...
There are fewer BB shout outs in this one than previous works. Since it takes place in a school, I couldn't help but have the science fair winners pass by Mr. Kelley's physics class.
As always, I appreciate your ever-present support and patience as I stagger through the publishing minefield. Every contract is an opportunity and every contract is a risk. Just like real life!
This year is starting to look up.
Thanks!

I see a classroom set of orders! Congratulations! And I love the title, and the plot, already.

Very exciting! I admire your perseverance and your positive attitude.
