Q3: I have not observed things to be "above the scroll", whatever that is supposed to mean. on all devices except my new little tablet scrolling is done via a bar on the right side of the screen (on el tableto you just run your finger down the screen itself; they've disposed of scroll bar. Now I'm trying to remember whether I-pads also work that way. Probably, but I can't remember.).

"Above the scroll" kinda-rhymes with "above the fold". The other answers make even less sense, & are more provably untrue. Go for it.

I think "above the scroll" refers to the part of the website that you can see on the screen without scrolling. Lazy readers like me will read that part, and only scroll down if the story is interesting.

jarnon, that makes perfect sense. Of course, literalists like me will take "above the scroll" to mean what I thought, literally "above the scroll bar", which runs to the top of the page. The contestant appeared to be taking things literally too, when he said re one of the other choices "you can't be above the URL; its at the top of the page".


A lot of people turn literalist under stress, which explains the contestant, but some of us are this way predominantly in real life. I have to warn my car passengers not to yell "turn left" unless they really want me to turn left Just Then, even if we're not at the cross street yet. Driving is enough stress already. Literal interpretations of incomplete directions (they should have said "turn left at the corner"!) don't help.

Many sites will display the first few paragraphs of a story and then say something like "scroll to continue" or "continues after jump." This is then often followed by a few rows of links, often including images, to other articles (which may or may not have similar content). After that, the main story continues.
