Georgia Governor Nathan Deal will be indicted

Republican Georgia Governor Nathan Deal will be indicted by a federal grand jury by no later than January 15, 2015, according to a source close to the investigation of the embattled former member of Congress. A second independent source confirmed that Deal will indeed be indicted, but could not verify when the indictment will be handed down.

Deal, who won reelection to a second four-year term as Georgia’s governor in November, has been under investigation since 2010. While a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Deal was accused of wrongdoing by the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE). The report issued by OCE concluded that Deal had improperly used his office staff in an attempt to pressure Georgia officials continue the state’s vehicle inspection program. This program, the report concluded, had generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue for Deal’s auto salvage company. Deal denied any wrongdoing and defiantly stated, “I have done nothing wrong and am not going to let this tarnish my record of public service. Less than a month later, Deal resigned from his Congressional seat but said he had done so to concentrate on his planned run in the Georgia gubernatorial primary.

In 2011, Deal became the subject of a state ethics investigation. This probe accused Deal of using campaign funds collected for his 2010 race for governor to pay legal bills stemming from the ethics investigation while still a member of Congress. As subpoenas were about to be issued in the state case, two members of the State Ethics Commission were released from their positions. One of the people appointed to replace the fired Ethics Committee members, it was later reported, had been hand-picked by the governor’s office. Shortly thereafter, Deal was cleared by the state ethics panel but did pay $3,500 to resolve “campaign and financial disclosure law” irregularities.

The current investigation by the U.S. Justice Department is believed to be focused on both the campaign-finance charges and the improper use of staff while Deal was still in Congress. A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that Deal will be indicted on multiple charges and that the case against him is “airtight.”

Much as I would enjoy seeing Deal get his day in court, I must say that your sourcing seems a bit suspect. The story seems to have originated with a website called "Liberal America" and doesn't reference any other news organization. Until CNN, the Atlanta Journal (both of whom have close ties to Georgia), or any other news organization reports it, I would take this with a gigantic grain of salt.

Just emailed an old friend from DC, who worked for Deal when he was a Democratic Congressman.

She said she hasn't heard anything but she wouldn't be surprised. But she hadn't heard anything

Nathan Deal has been investigated for four years now; there has frequently been talk of a pending indictment. No one is Georgia would be surprised. No one in Georgia would care if he was found guilty. The sitting Lieutenant Governor is an egomaniacal creep. Don't know which one most Georgians would prefer.

I must've missed BJ's posts about these incidents. But I'm sure these were all false charges and convictions, politically motivated by the evil republicans. Only charges made against non democrats are actually true corruption.

But seriously (but why do I bother?) BJ, there will always be corrupt people in government. It doesn't matter what party they belong to. Because many corrupt people are attracted to the power that public office gives them. And those people, once in government, seek to expand the power that they have. And we have elected a lot of those people, and the power of government has expanded geometrically in the past few decades, and especially in the past decade. That is why Washington DC is one of the most, if not the most, wealthy city in the country. Government is a booming industry, and it's all on our dime.

That is why I am invested in the Tea Party Movement. It seems to be the only political movement that understands that this can't go on. And that is also why the Tea Party is vilified and lied about by the powers that be.

Something about "not a smidgen of corruption involving the IRS" I believe is the current meme.

That said, the powers that be, on either side of the aisle, don't want their gravy boat rocked:

There are 3 of us in this thread. That was the point of the list I posted, that I didn't recall BJ mentioning a single one of those cases, neither at accusation, trial nor conviction. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the number of Republicans I deleted was far, far less than half the complete list. BJ would have BBs believe otherwise.
