ANSWERS/POINTS LS WACKY WEDNESDAY March 26

Looks like yesterday was a killer, so hopefully we can bounce back on this one.

1. Just sweet sixteen and now you're gone
They've taken you away
I'll never kiss your lips again
They buried you today

2. I sleep alone at nights again
I walk alone each day
And sometimes when I'm about to give in
I hear her sweet voice say to me

3. Something warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while

4. He walked into the bar
And parked his lanky frame upon a tall barstool
And with a long soft Southern drawl said
"I'll just have a glass of anything that's cool"

5. No one knows what happened that day
Or how his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath, they heard him say

6. Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along

7. And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say

8. The headlines read that a boy disappeared
and everyone thinks he died
'Cept a crazy girl with a secret lover
Who keeps her satisfied.
It's so nice to be insane
No one asks you to explain

9. It was a cold and dark December night
When I opened up the bedroom door
To find her lying still and cold upon the bed
A love letter lying on the bedroom floor

10. If I live 'til ninety-seven
You'll still be waiting in refrigerator heaven
Cause you're cool, you're ice
** ** you're my paradise

Bonus Instrumental: This piece, officially titled Piano Trio in D Major No. 70 Opus 1, was dedicated by this composer to Countess Marie von Erdody, with whom he resided in Vienna. The popular name of this piece fits in with today’s theme.

Bonus Bonus: Who portrayed the two persons mentioned in the Bonus Instrumental in a somewhat fictionalized biopic of the composer?

Super Bonus: One song that didn’t make the cut today features a video with Kim Basinger playing a woman who’s a bit blue (ha, ha). What's the song and who's doing it?

Actually, today looks like more of a killer to me. Literally, too, from the tone of the lyrics.

6. Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
7. Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods - Billy, Don't be a Hero
9. Hot Chocolate - Emma

NFI on anything else.

1. Teen Angel, Bobby someone?

3. Where Can My Baby Be? (not sounding right, oh well)

5. Tell Laura I Love Her (?)

6. Seasons In The Sun

Bonus Instrumental: Guessing it's something by Mozart. Requiem? -- doesn't really fit with the "songs that really annoy me" theme, but I'll go with it.

Bonus Bonus: Tom Hulce was Mozart in Amadeus, don't know who played the countess, but it may not matter cuz I could be in left field.

5. Tell Laura I Love Her/I dunno artist (artist?!)

9. Well, its neither "Scarlet Ribbons" (eeek; only in a horror story could it end that way) nor "Butcher Boy" of folkie fame ("tell the world I died of love") but it could be

Spoiler
1-Teen Angel-Mark Dinning
2-Rocky-Austin Roberts. I've sputtered on and on a number of times about how dumb the lyrics are in this song. I probably did it the first time I played this game, so I'll restrain myself this time.
3-Last Kiss-J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers and, if I must, Pearl Jam
4-If You're Dead and You're STILL Sucking Down the Pabst Blue Ribbons, You Might Be a Redneck-Jeff Foxworthy
5-Tell Laura I Love Her-Ray Petersen
6-Seasons in the Sun-Terry Jacks
7-Billy Don't Be a Hero-Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods. I've also mentioned a hundred times that this was one of the songs we tortured my brother Bill with. It is truly a wonder that, not only is he still talking to me, but he has not stomped me into the cracks in the pavement as he would've been fully justified in doing once he got bigger than me!
8-Angie Baby-Helen Reddy (who certainly would have a place on my top 10 most disliked singers).
9-My Baby Really Took the Lump of Coal in Her Stocking Hard-Elves With Attitude
10-Cold Ethyl-Alice Cooper

Bonus Instrumental: I assume its Ludvig Von, but can't come up with the "nickname".

Bonus Bonus: the movie would be "Immortal Beloved", Beethoven was played by Gary Oldman. Never saw it but heard of it...dunno who played the countess.

Super Bonus: Nada Kloo.

Looks like yesterday was a killer, so hopefully we can bounce back on this one.

1. Just sweet sixteen and now you're gone
They've taken you away
I'll never kiss your lips again
They buried you today

Teen Angel, can you hear me
Teen Angle, are you near me
something something
my own true love.

Teen Angel, Rick Nelson

3. Something warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while
I held her close
I kissed her our last kiss
And so I found
The love I knew I had missed.
Something...
I lost my love my life that night.
Oh where or where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can meet my baby when I leave this world.

Last Kiss, J. Frank Wilson

5. No one knows what happened that day
Or how his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath, they heard him say
Tell Laura I love her
Tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura not to cry
My love for her
Will never die.

Tell Laura I love her, Gene Pitney

6. Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along
We had joy
We had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons are all gone.

Seasons in the sun, Terry Jacks.

7. And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say

Billy don't be a hero, the Shangri-Las.

8. The headlines read that a boy disappeared
and everyone thinks he died
'Cept a crazy girl with a secret lover
Who keeps her satisfied.
It's so nice to be insane
No one asks you to explain

Angie Baby, Helen Reddy

10. If I live 'til ninety-seven
You'll still be waiting in refrigerator heaven
Cause you're cool, you're ice
** ** you're my paradise

Except for Angie Baby, this is way later than the other songs, but I can't put a name to the band I hear playing it. I'll guess Flock of Seagulls.

Spoiler
1. Just sweet sixteen and now you're gone
They've taken you away
I'll never kiss your lips again
They buried you today
Teen Angel - no idea on artist

2. I sleep alone at nights again
I walk alone each day
And sometimes when I'm about to give in
I hear her sweet voice say to me
?

3. Something warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while
Last Kiss - Pearl Jam (and someone else I don't know)

4. He walked into the bar
And parked his lanky frame upon a tall barstool
And with a long soft Southern drawl said
"I'll just have a glass of anything that's cool"
?

5. No one knows what happened that day
Or how his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath, they heard him say
Tell Laura I Love Her - Ray Peterson

6. Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along
Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

7. And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say
Billy, Don't Be a Hero - Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods

8. The headlines read that a boy disappeared
and everyone thinks he died
'Cept a crazy girl with a secret lover
Who keeps her satisfied.
It's so nice to be insane
No one asks you to explain
?

9. It was a cold and dark December night
When I opened up the bedroom door
To find her lying still and cold upon the bed
A love letter lying on the bedroom floor
Emma - Sisters of Mercy

10. If I live 'til ninety-seven
You'll still be waiting in refrigerator heaven
Cause you're cool, you're ice
** ** you're my paradise
Cold Ethyl - Alice Copoper

Bonus Instrumental: This piece, officially titled Piano Trio in D Major No. 70 Opus 1, was dedicated by this composer to Countess Marie von Erdody, with whom he resided in Vienna. The popular name of this piece fits in with today’s theme.
Ghost - Beethoven

Bonus Bonus: Who portrayed the two persons mentioned in the Bonus Instrumental in a somewhat fictionalized biopic of the composer?
Didn't see the movie. I know Gary Oldman played Beethoven. Don't know who played the Countess.

Super Bonus: One song that didn’t make the cut today features a video with Kim Basinger playing a woman who’s a bit blue (ha, ha). What's the song and who's doing it?
She was in 8 Mile, right? How about "Lose Yourself" by Eminem?

I know I'm too lat to qualify, but this is such a cheery theme, I wanted to put my guesses in anyway.

Looks like yesterday was a killer, so hopefully we can bounce back on this one.

1. Just sweet sixteen and now you're gone
They've taken you away
I'll never kiss your lips again
They buried you today

TEEN ANGEL - MARK DINNING

2. I sleep alone at nights again
I walk alone each day
And sometimes when I'm about to give in
I hear her sweet voice say to me

ROCKY - AUSTIN ROBERTS

I don't care what tbone says, I was about 10 when this was popular and I thought it was oh so romantic.

3. Something warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while

LAST KISS - J FRANK WILSON and the CAVALIERS or PEARL JAM

Half credit for Where Can My Baby Be

4. He walked into the bar
And parked his lanky frame upon a tall barstool
And with a long soft Southern drawl said
"I'll just have a glass of anything that's cool"

COUNTRY BUMPKIN - CAL SMITH

I'd forgotten all about Phantom 409 (ed's guess), my dad's band did that song when I was a little kid and it would always creep me out.

5. No one knows what happened that day
Or how his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath, they heard him say

TELL LAURA I LOVE HER - RAY PETERSON

Half credit if you didn't know who he loved.

6. Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along

SEASONS IN THE SUN - TERRY JACKS

I'm sure I've posted the risque lyrics we used to sing to this, so I'll not revisit that. But what is the Faux Emil verse?

7. And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say

BILLY DON'T BE A HERO - BO DONALDSON AND THE HEYWOODS

I also have this on a 45 by Paper Lace (of The Night Chicago Died fame)

8. The headlines read that a boy disappeared
and everyone thinks he died
'Cept a crazy girl with a secret lover
Who keeps her satisfied.
It's so nice to be insane
No one asks you to explain

ANGIE BABY - HELEN REDDY

Half credit for Angie (I actually think this song was popular around the same time as Angie, which was very confusing. I'm looking at the timeline through the rose coloured glasses of youth, so I might be off.)

9. It was a cold and dark December night
When I opened up the bedroom door
To find her lying still and cold upon the bed
A love letter lying on the bedroom floor

EMMA - HOT CHOCOLATE

And apparently Sisters of Mercy, although I have no idea who they are.

10. If I live 'til ninety-seven
You'll still be waiting in refrigerator heaven
Cause you're cool, you're ice
** ** you're my paradise

COLD ETHYL - ALICE COOPER

Bonus Instrumental: This piece, officially titled Piano Trio in D Major No. 70 Opus 1, was dedicated by this composer to Countess Marie von Erdody, with whom he resided in Vienna. The popular name of this piece fits in with today’s theme.

GHOST TRIO - BEETHOVEN

Bonus Bonus: Who portrayed the two persons mentioned in the Bonus Instrumental in a somewhat fictionalized biopic of the composer?

GARY OLDMAN and ISABELLA ROSSELLINI (Immortal Beloved)

Super Bonus: One song that didn’t make the cut today features a video with Kim Basinger playing a woman who’s a bit blue (ha, ha). What's the song and who's doing it?

MARY JANE'S LAST DANCE - TOM PETTY

RHCP's Dani California was the first single off their latest album. I was in the car one day and and it started playing and I wondered 'why is the classic rock station playing a current song?' Come to find out it was Mary Jane's Last Dance! RHCP totally ripped off Tom Petty. That must be why I liked Dani California so much in the first place. Ha!

Ghost gets 2 bonus points for Blue Kim because I thought that was funny.

SEASONS IN THE SUN - TERRY JACKS

I'm sure I've posted the risque lyrics we used to sing to this, so I'll not revisit that. But what is the Faux Emil verse?

Goodbye Emil, my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye Emil, it's hard to die
When all the bird's are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
I wish we could both be there

I used the first set of this verse in both the March 2003 and December 2004 LS games I ran, both times drawing some "Huhs?" from the crowd. I finally learned my lesson and used a different set this year. This song doesn't get much airplay around here (though they used to play the hell out of it on VH1C, remember?) and it never occured to me either time that I don't recall having ever heard about an Emil anyway, yet I continued to use it.... probably because I always thought Emil was a cool name. I don't know if it was something that got chopped from the radio version, or just something that came out of the imagination of whoever transcribed the set of lyrics I used, but anyway, there it is....

You probably found the Rod McKuen version, which was a direct translation from the Jacques Brel 1961 song called "Le Moribund." When Terry Jacks recorded it, I don't know if he thought people wouldn't understand the name "Emil" or what, but he sang it as "Goodbye to you, my trusted friend." and "Goodbye my friend it's hard to die."
