What happened on J! tonight??
I was all ready to watch J! and was annoyed to see something called the Hollywood Film Awards pre-show on my TV. Yep, J! is on a CBS station here.
Did Julia Collins make the semi finals as a wild card? Her $9100 score the other night made that look kind of precarious. I was so looking forward to a final with her and Arthur Chu in it.

Re: What happened on J! tonight??
I only watched Final Jeopardy.
Spoiler
All three contestants got it right (it was about opera, and I didn't know it) and advanced to next week's semifinals. Julia Collins, Arthur Chu and Terry O'Shea ( http://wwtbambored.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 25#p490472 ) are in the semifinals too.

She was guaranteed to make it as of the end of last night's show. --BobKazoo65 wrote:I was all ready to watch J! and was annoyed to see something called the Hollywood Film Awards pre-show on my TV. Yep, J! is on a CBS station here.

I'm a tiny bit responsible for Rebecca being on the J! TOC.
Her very first J! win came at my expense when she ended my (very brief - one game) reign as J! Champion.
I came in second in that game by about 800 bucks.
Oh well!

And not only that but Ben Ingram, who will compete in the finals of the J! ToC is the nephew of a friend of mine down here in North Carolina.
He's got his work cut out for him playing Julia Collins and Arthur Chu!

Arthur Chu seems like a good guy. I want to punch him in the throat.

Re: What happened on J! tonight??
I kind of feel sorry for Ben. He's going up against 2 of the best players from last year-sorta like when Roger Craig wound up playing KJ and Brad Rutter in the finals of the Battle of the Decades-way out of his league.
I'll be tuning in to see what happens the next two nights-I wonder what would happen if there was a tie.

Re: What happened on J! tonight??
I tried to contact Terry O'Shea after Monday's show. I learned that the alumni directory doesn't include current students. Luckily, FB came through.
jarnon wrote:Hi Terry,
I'm so proud of your success in the College Tournament and ToC. Sorry you ran into the Julia juggernaut. By coincidence, Ken Jennings was on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" today, and this question stumped him: "Because it DOESN'T officially recognize Greek life, what school's 'eating clubs' serve as a substitute for fraternities & sororities?" The audience and Ken's studio guest didn't know it either, so Ken had to jump the question. I was a "Millionaire" contestant a year ago, and I would have loved that question. Another coincidence: the contestant after Ken was named Terry, and the host of the show is Terry too. You should audition for "Millionaire" next year.
All the best, jarnon '75
Terry O'Shea wrote:Haha, I would have loved that question on Jeopardy! too. Such strange coincidences, wow!
Millionaire's definitely on the radar, but maybe I'll try for it in a few years when I've had more time to study. Anyway, thanks for reaching out to me. It's always nice hearing from alumni.
Best,
Terry O'Shea '16

Re: What happened on J! tonight??
It would be a tiebreaker clue like they've done in tournament semi finals or tournament finals(1996 teen tourney final, Celeste Dinucci's 2007 TofC semi game). Word is that after the TofC is over, regular games ending in a tie with scores other than 0-0-0 will now be broken with a tiebreaker clue rather than declaring co-champs.Kazoo65 wrote:I kind of feel sorry for Ben. So after the first Final round are you still feeling sorry for Ben?Kazoo65 wrote:I kind of feel sorry for Ben. He's going up against 2 of the best players from last year-sorta like when Roger Craig wound up playing KJ and Brad Rutter in the finals of the Battle of the Decades-way out of his league.

I didn't even understand the Final J! clue, never mind come up with the correct response.

It was worded poorly. The clue should have said "tickets" instead of "ballots." --BobTomC4253 wrote:So after the first Final round are you still feeling sorry for Ben?Kazoo65 wrote:I kind of feel sorry for Ben. Re: What happened on J! tonight??
I was pleasantly surprised at how well Ben did against the two superstars.
I didn't get FJ right either, and US history is one of my strong suits. I guessed 1960 thinking about JFK, LBJ, and Nixon
who all wound up being President. Turns out I was 40 years too late. I didn't realize FDR ran in 1920.

Re: What happened on J! tonight??
1960 doesn't fit the clue because Nixon was Vice President at the time. --BobKazoo65 wrote:I was pleasantly surprised at how well Ben did against the two superstars.

While now obvious, that is where my brain went and it would not have had enough time to figure out why I was wrong AND think of a better answer.

The 1920 presidential election is noteworthy as it was the first women nationwide could vote in and had the first election results to be broadcast over the radio.

Yep, Roger and Ben were two peas in a pod, hopelessly out of their league and in way over their heads. Except that Ben handily defeated his two overhyped opponents and Roger would have done the same if he had gotten either one of those True Daily Doubles in his final against Ken and Brad. If they ever face each other again, I like Roger's chances. Roger is every bit the equal of Ken and Brad.Kazoo65 wrote:I kind of feel sorry for Ben. As southerner, I feel the need to mention that I know Ben's people. His Aunt is married to a someone I with whom I used to practice law.
Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
