<sigh>

Isaac should have gotten this. He knew Franz Ferdinand died just before WWI and I'm sure he knew where Crockett died. What he didn't do (at least as far as he verbalized it) was to put some dates on those event and calculate the age F.F. would have to be to overlap the Alamo. I'm sure he'd have concluded that F.F. wasn't 78 when he was shot.

As for myself, I had no idea who Ariana Grande was, but I figured she was some recent celebrity. That was an old Phone Game rule of thumb, right? The one you don't know is probably the most recent! And, therefore, if she didn't overlap Crockett, nobody else did, either.

Once you know that two overlap, and a third doesn't overlap either of those two, then it doesn't matter who the fourth is. There is a group of three, and a group of one (the correct answer), so if the third person isn't in the group of three (which he can't be because he would have to overlap one of the first two), then he has to be the group of one.

I told elwing that he would probably be a one-and-done. Since Crockett died in 1836, it was only a matter of whether Ferdinand was alive then. I seem to recall that he was fairly young when he was assassinated in 1914, so I'd have gone with Crockett.

I had to read the Q twice to figure out exactly what they were asking. At least the contestant was not in doubt about that. I knew Ariana G. was a recent celeb of some sort, but also that she's probably late teens or early 20s, old enough to have overlapped Reagan. Which leaves "was Franz F. born before the Alamo battle?". I think I would have gone for Crockett rather than using up a lifeline left.
