Americans Arguing Less This Election Cycle Than in 2012

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Fri Oct 24, 2014 8:45 am

You wouldn't know it from this Bored, but a recent Rasmussen poll indicates Americans are arguing less about the elections this year than in 2012. Only 20% report having a heated argument with a friend or family member about the election, compared to 45% who reported such an argument at a similar time in the 2012 cycle. Of course, it may simply be that, just as here, many people have come to realize that arguing with someone is highly unlikely to change their opinion or their vote. Or it may be that, as here, they just don't have as many friends because they've all left their social networks....

Or it could be an indicator of a landslide to one side of the aisle. People aren't arguing as much because they agree more.
..what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms.
~~ Thomas Jefferson

War is where the government tells you who the bad guy is.
Revolution is when you decide that for yourself.

I no longer talk to the people I argued with in 2012. :P

I would bet it's simply because most people pay less attention to non-presidential elections.

How so? In most threads, I see the same three or four people arguing back and forth. A lot more people were wasting their time arguing in political threads in past elections... it's down to the die hards now with the occasional naive interjection by an outsider...

An argument here is a spectator sport, not that there are any spectators
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

If that were true, the spectators would still be here. Most people who don't enjoy gratuitous negativity have moved on.

I read the threads but have nothing/little to contribute either way, so all I do is read the threads.
