Josh Tenney
Orem, UT

Terry introduces x as a dedicated father who wants to make a difference in the world for his daughter. She has a rare condition called XP, short for xeroderma pigmentosum. It means she can't be exposed to sunlight. If Josh wins the million he wants to build a huge indoor playground. Josh has $13,100 in his bank and his ATA lifeline available.

A - Animal Planet
B - Fox Business Network
C - Sprout
D - Golf Channel

Josh says that
Spoiler
being the father of two little girls he knows they need a lot of sleep and Sprout is a children's network
. He says that because his daughter can't be in the sunlight, sometimes they play outside at night and she doesn't go to bed until midnight, especially during summer.
Spoiler

Bank: $14,100
Question #6:
Which pop singer's first name was inspired by her mother's maiden name?

B - Miley Cyrus
C - Mariah Carey
D - Taylor Swift

Josh knows who all four are and can name some of their music. He knows Miley's father's name. He says that
Spoiler
Taylor is a very popular last name
. Because there is so much big money still on the board he's going to take the risk.
Spoiler

Q6: I don't remember if this guy had lifelines left, & his earlier Qs haven't been posted. If he had them, he should have used them. Or else he should have walked. I feel for the guy because of his daughter's condition, & maybe needing the money so much was what made him take a flier on this, but still.

I know, because I've read & heard it, that Miley is her family's version of "Smiley", because she was a smiley child. I was pretty sure that Mariah is, well, Mariah. Just a pretty name, no-one's maiden name.

I've read stuff about Swift & about Knowles, but nothing on this subject stood out to me about them.

Spoiler
If the contestant was taking as a given that "some North American black people give their kids names that sound exotic to some of their white North American counterparts" & ruled Beyoncé out by that reasoning, he was wrong to do it.

Looking Beyonce's mom up on the internet leads me down many garden paths which claim she is older than she says, went out with 2 Knowles guys (but only married one; so what?), etc. Most sources agree that the mom is of African American & Louisiana Creole descent. Some also cite Native American. Some sites for Beyonce herself cite 1/16th Irish, but don't say if this is from her mom or dad's side. The name in question is Beyince, but mom & dad thought it had more oomph with the "i" changed to "o". Reportedly there "weren't enough male Beyinces being born", & they wanted to keep the name in the family.

Her dad is the one famous for creating & shepherding Destiny's Child, but her mom was the singer in the family, having been in girl groups herself. Mom is also a fashion designer.

I'm surprised he didn't use his ATA - I would have.

I think this year's batch of APs weren't told one of the cardinal rules of casting: any story involving diseases or severe medical conditions has to be something already overcome, so that the positive story arc is established from the start. Otherwise, we're left with situations like this, with Terry (virtually) saying "No playground for you, little girl!" :(
