The raw figures show there were 600 accidental shooting deaths in 2010, yet there were 30,781 accidental poisoning deaths in that same year. There were 554 accidental shooting deaths in 2009 vs. 31,758 accidental poisoning deaths and 592 accidental shooting deaths in 2008 vs. 31,116 accidental poisoning deaths.
Moreover, the CDC shows that Americans are approximately 10 times as likely to die from accidental suffocation vs. an accidental shooting and almost 6 times more likely to die via accidental drowning (non-boating related) than accidental shooting.

None of which changes the validity of my argument. And, by the way, if you'd read the New York Times article I cited, it provides some strong anecdotal evidence that a substantial number of accidental shooting deaths involving children are listed on police and medical reports as homicide. I'm guessing that's to enable them to bring manslaughter charges against parents if warranted.

This has nothing to do with the current discussion, sorry. The phrase I added the emphasis for always makes me nervous. Is "accidental suffocation" code for auto erotic asphyxiation? Or can that be attributed to at least some of the suffocations? One local parent was devastated when his son hung himself. He might have been able to hush up the cause of death in the newspaper article considering the young man's age, but instead, he asked that it be given full publicity, so maybe other local youths might be warned and spared.

I'd just like to be sure that suffocation figures don't include auto erotic asphyxiation.

The phrase I added the emphasis for always makes me nervous. Is "accidental suffocation" code for auto erotic asphyxiation? Or can that be attributed to at least some of the suffocations?

It would seem that this would include things like children putting plastic bags over their heads or being trapped in refrigerators, gas leaks, and any other situation in which a person didn't intend to kill himself or died as a result of someone else's intentional act. That would seem to include auto erotic asphyxiation since the person didn't intend to commit suicide.
